  • Powder Instruction Multi-Day Tours: these are ideal for riders who can charge the piste but struggle or lack confidence in powder. The coaches provide some tips to progress away from the groomers and into the deep fresh snow.
  • Resort Powder Multi-Day Tours: if you already know how to ride powder, the guides show you all the best inbounds and slackcountry powder. Mostly lift accessed with the occasional hard traverse or quick boot pack gets you to primo powder, and there may be a few road drops with van pick-up.
  • Lift Accessed Backcountry Tours: you want the powder goods but only want to put some work into getting it. You'll use the lifts and sometimes use touring gear to get further afield.
  • Backcountry Touring Tours: occasionally the lifts might be used but ski touring or splitboarding to get away from the resorts is key to sublime powder and terrain.
  • Powder Discovery: these are in resort / in bounds powder exploration in off piste areas. No backcountry lines or equipment required
  • Lessons: focus on tuition and those ready to commence powder riding will be shown around off-piste powder stashes

Whilst hospitality and service levels often surpass Western standards, rooms generally have less furniture & hanging/storage space. Ensuites are generally smaller and some are of a modular design. Some Japanese properties also allow smoking in common areas & some guest rooms. Traditional Hotels or Ryokans often have rooms with Tatami Matt flooring and futon beds. Some rooms will not have ensuites and instead will have shared bathing in segregated bath houses or onsens. We will inform you of these cultural differences and you may be pleasantly surprised by how easily you can adjust to the Japanese way of life. If not please request a western style accommodation.

WAIVER

If you are participating in a Whiteroom Tour or are being guided by Whiteroom you will be required to read and sign our wavier before participation. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to accompany our guides on any activity.

Into the White Room at Furano

11/04/2024
We’ve been to Furano various times and have explored many parts of the mountain and the backcountry, but we tend to keep going back to our fave zones. Having a guide just took the fun factor up multiple notches. There had been no fresh snow overnight, but the upper lifts had been closed the previous day, so there was plenty of fresh powder on offer. We started with a couple of traditional sidecountry lines and then staying ahead of the pack, the guide took us to a few lines that didn’t feel familiar. The terrain was fantastic and the snow was superb – it was Hokkaido skiing at its finest. Our guide was also rather entertaining! The experience reinforced that having a guide at Furano can be incredibly beneficial.

Whiteroom have been guiding in the area for a long time and it was easy to see why they have an excellent reputation and are booked out well in advance.

Japan 'glades'
This tour is not for the faint of heart. Be ready to ski hard. You will be skiing in the forest if you want Japow.

There is lots of powder out there: sometimes it is a little tracked, sometimes fresh, and sometimes very tracked. If you are a very, very competent tree skier on moderate to steep terrain this is the deal. The guides are great and will work with you to give you what you want, but very little to no on piste-type powder runs. It is trees, trees trees.

You will visit a new resort every day and the guides take you to super cool restaurants almost every evening. Expect to spend about an hour in the van each morning and evening.

Worth His Weight in Gold

Ross showing us the best powder stashes
Our guide knew that there'd be little bamboo to contend with
Knew the spots to head to
Ross showing us a nice zone
Nice pick for a run
Having a great guide is usually highly beneficial to finding the great stashes, but considering our timing, a guide was critical to us having an absolutely epic time in the powder. It was early season (between Xmas & New Years) in a really lean season, and the off-piste at most of the Central Hokkaido ski areas was pretty rank due to an abundance of leg catching bamboo. However our WRTs guide knew that Asahidake would be the best spot for powder hunting that day due to his knowledge of the weather patterns, its high elevation, and subsequent lack of bamboo.

Our guide Ross was also worth his weight in gold because Asahidake is an amazing powder gem, but only if you know it intimately. We’ve been to Asahidake multiple times, but still don’t know all the amazing zones or the exact best spot to push out. Thanks to Ross, we skied divine deep powder on some nice steep pitches. That night back in Furano, others were incredibly envious because they’d spent the day getting bamboozled elsewhere.

Thanks again WhiteRoom for a fantastic day of powder skiing and plenty of fun banter.

Great Powder Skiing

All aspects of the trip were great, and even the weather cooperated. Great places to stay, excellent on and off piste terrain, wide variety of mountains, and a guide that could not be have been better. Would recommend for those that love glades and want to lay down fresh tracks in deep powder. Some experience in powder is helpful, and strong on piste is required IMO. Would do this trip again without hesitation if money grew on trees.

Mixed success

10/02/2020
It was a tough year, due to low snow pack. Even though, it was expertly led on the slopes. We visited 7 destinations in 10 ski-days. All events transpired smoothly. The trees were tight and there was excessive brush that made linked turns rare. The best runs required hiking in varied lengths. We got 2 good powder days that made the trip.

On the not-so-hot list, the hotels varied widely from top shelf to unacceptable (shared room, bath down the hall, pounding music until midnight). Guide knowledge of local culture and history was zero.

I recommend this tour to the young at heart who don’t care about anything but skiing/riding. Bring your earplugs.

I think the thing that stood out to me most was the incredible team that Whiteroom have.
Nate ( our guide) was fantastic, he always went out of his way to ensure we were getting the most out of the tour. His willingness to help out by dropping us off places, recommendations and follow up were brilliant. The pics and videos he took will be treasured. He always followed up on requests, kept us up to date, read the group well and went the extra mile. Fantastic instruction and guiding.

When we first arrived Yu (the Full note accomodation manager) met us with a huge smile, friendly nothing is a problem attitude and was incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our whole stay. All the staff were great they always asked about our day, made us feel at home and provided great service.

Even when I went down to the office to sort out a bus transfer they phoned around for me, recommended a cheaper ski pass rate than we were going to get and sorted everything out effortlessly. I commented to a friend how nice it was that everyone at full note called us by our names, this again an example of what stood out and a reflection of Whiteroom service and brand. An impressive business and service example for others to follow. Would recommend to anyone.

Two Guided days in Furano area

27/01/2020
We had a great experience with Ian at Whiteroom Tours. He took us to two different zones in the same area, per our request that we follow the best snow. They were big days - we had requested a challenge and he definitely delivered! We learned a lot about the region, as well as the snowpack, and covered a ton of ground. Ian was very knowledgable and a great companion. He gave us a lot of information that allowed us to successfully explore on our own for the rest of our trip.

Yuko, Whiteroom Tours Guest Services Supervisor & Travel Consultant, was incredibly helpful with our booking, as well as other aspects of our trip. She was extremely communicative and helped us book other accommodations that required Japanese.

We would love to book through Whiteroom again on our next trip, to learn about other areas, and to have the assistance that they provided with so many aspects of our trip.

Unfortunately this season in Niseko the famed powder was nowhere to be seen in late February. The Full Note Inn was a lovely place to stay and our hosts were fantastic. The two ski guides were capable and great company. They did the best they could under the circumstances of poor snow conditions, however I personally didn't gain anything in relation to powder skiing from this trip.

Endless Powder Days

Alex
25/02/2019
Hokkaido, with the exception of parts of the Niseko area, is like skiing Vermont if Vermont were to have the best snow in the world. Modest-sized mountains at low elevation with limited steepness. Lots of tree runs. Beautiful powder that falls endlessly, day in and day out. We didn't have any particular day where it bombed snow, but that was probably for the best as it's not much fun to ski waist-deep powder on mountains that aren't that steep. Rather, we had consistent, light, fluffy snowfall throughout the trip.

Guides were solid. Group was a mix of skiers and boarders, younger and older. We divided up between the two guides accordingly. Eleven ski days with one break day. I'd say about half the skiing with on-piste and the other half was side-country. One day, one of the guides took some of us out touring, which was a first for me and was a lot of fun. Another day we did a bunch of runs with the vans picking us up down along the resort access road.

I personally liked all the places we'd stay, but it was a mix in terms of type. Furano we stayed at a classic roadside ski lodge type place. Nothing fancy, but really enjoyed it, especially their breakfasts. Niseko we stayed in what was basically a skiers hostel. It had a good energy, though aspects of it were inconvenient, e.g. the shared showers being in the basement of the building. Otaru we stayed in a higher-end hotel right on the water. (I wish I had stuck around an extra day to explore Otaru.) I was traveling solo and opted to pay extra to get my own room for Furano and Otaru, the other option being to share a room with someone else on the trip.

Besides the skiing, stopping at a beautiful onsen and then checking out the Sapporo Snow Festival during our break day were highlights.

Really nice group of folks from all around the world, many who I hope to keep in touch with and perhaps even ski with again in the future.

A trip to remember

Bennett

Had an awesome time as a solo traveler. They interview you a little before you book the trip, to insure everyone is indeed at an advanced/expert level which worked well. We had college aged to mid 60’s but everyone was a very good skier/boarder. Everyone got along great and felt much more like skiing with a group of friends than skiing with strangers. We went to 6 different mountains depending on wind conditions, snowfall, and crowds. Found fresh snow with no/limited tracks everyday of the trip. The guides found the snow, gave us clear instructions on the next route we would take, and did all of the planning for us. If I skied one mountain there by myself for a week, I wouldn’t have found 80% of where they took us.
The lodging is a basic ski lodge setup, but has an onsen, ski drying room, and an alright breakfast.

It was our first time to Hokkaido and we loved the laid back atmosphere of Furano. Our guides, Blackie and Natalie were top notch and lots of fun. After a day with Blackie at Furano we skied there two more days and felt we knew the mountain, the best routes and what to look for for our safety. Natalie took us (sorry I don’t remember name) to another resort about an hour away on the coldest day in recorded history -31 F windchill and then to an Onsen to warm up. The best day was the last with the sun out at Sahoro resort doing van laps in the deep untouched powder. All in all a wonderful experience

Went on this tour in Feb '18. One of the best experience of my life. Guiding was a hard 10/10, and Hokkaido is an amazing place to see. The itinerary allows you to see a good bit of the island.

Accommodations in Niseko & Furano are more or less hostel style, so if you want more hotel style, request the upgrade.
