Central Hokkaido Backcountry Tour - New for 2026

The Central Hokkaido Backcountry Tour from Whiteroom is an exploratory style backcountry adventure that heads deep into Hokkaido’s famed Powder Belt. You'll stay in Furano in Central Hokkaido, as well as the city of Asahikawa, which is the gateway to Northern Hokkaido which is delightfully cold and snowy, and relatively unknown.

You'll possibly use the occasional lift to gain vertical, but this trip is nearly all about earning your deep powder turns by ski touring or splitboarding.

Highlights

  • 2 very experienced backcountry guides and a maximum of 6 people on tour
  • Earn your turns whilst ski touring or splitboarding for the reward of some of the deepest and driest powder in Hokkaido
  • Explore the classic backcountry zones in the Daisetsuzan National Park plus untapped areas to the north such as around Horokanai, Nayoro or further afield
  • Stay in comfortable hotels in Furano and Asahikawa, both of which provide easy access to a variety of restaurants and izakaya
  • Relax as your guides drive you between the hotel and the trailhead each day
  • Your guides are experts off-snow too and can take you to the best mountain onsen and places to sample the local cuisine
In addition to exploring the majestic Daisetsuzan National Park and nearby backcountry areas that are somewhat well known, the Central Hokkaido Backcountry Tour also provides the opportunity to push further north into new zones that few have experienced. This trip allows exploration of some of the largest mountains in Hokkaido, and a selection of areas truly off the map for most who visit the north island.

For the first 3 nights, you will be based out of Furano which is well placed to explore the southern Daisetsuzan including Furanodake, Tokachidake, Sandan-yama and some close by favourites. This area is home to incredibly dry powder snow and a mixture of alpine terrain and gladed tree skiing to work in with the conditions. The perfect finale for the day is a soak in a natural mountainside onsen in the area. There is also the flexibility to head to the south to the Hidaka Mountains.

From Furano the trip then heads north to the city of Asahikawa for 5 nights where your guide/s will take you into a great mixture of terrain and explore new zones. You’ll be close by to the renowned Asahidake and Kurodake, and also head deeper north into areas off the map to most who visit Hokkaido. The guides are excited to be able to provide this great new way for you to spend more days in the Central region and its endless backcountry.

If you want to double check availability or have any other questions, please get in touch.

Ability & Fitness Level

Over seven days on snow, you’ll be touring far and wide so a high level of fitness and experience touring will be needed, with several seasons of touring under your belt. You will be out for multi-run days all under your own leg power to get away from the crowds and explore further.

You will need to have advanced plus ability in powder and touring as a minimum. This tour requires that you must be able to ski the whole mountain with confidence and at speed in powder, through trees and in variable conditions. Snowboarders must be able to keep speed in all situations as well as hold a high traverse line. Please make a an honest assessment of your abilities whilst keeping fitness in mind as to not slow the group down.

Touring equipment (AT-skis or split-boards) is required and no snowshoes.

If this tour is not quite the right fit for you, also check out the summary of other tours offered by WhiteRoom Tours.

JAPANESE ACCOMMODATION

Some Japanese properties may differ from those encountered in Western ski resorts. Whilst hospitality and service levels often surpass Western standards, rooms generally have less furniture & hanging/storage space. Ensuites are generally smaller and some are of a modular design. Some Japanese properties also allow smoking in common areas & some guest rooms. Traditional Hotels or Ryokans often have rooms with Tatami Matt flooring and futon beds. Some rooms will not have ensuites and instead will have shared bathing in segregated bath houses or onsens. We will inform you of these cultural differences and you may be pleasantly surprised by how easily you can adjust to the Japanese way of life. If not please request a western style accommodation.

WAIVER

If you are participating in a Whiteroom Tour or are being guided by Whiteroom you will be required to read and sign our wavier before participation. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to accompany our guides on any activity.
