San Domenico Ski Resort Italy

San Domenico ski resort looks to have everything a true powder hound is seeking. A luscious skiable vertical on advanced terrain in a high snowfall region is a great start. A quiet, authentic Italian mountain valley and villages combined with cheap lift passes seals the deal. Located on the Swiss border near the Simplon Pass between Brig & Milan, San Domenico is relatively easy to get to via the train or car. We have heard great things about this resort and are heading there next season to check it out.

Skiing & Snowboarding, Lift & Terrain

The San Domenico skiing & snowboarding terrain has undergone a total revamp in the last decade. New chairs in the upper mountain, plus extensive slope development and snowmaking down to the base have changed the mountain for the better. Over 1000m of skiable vertical, ample freeride terrain and 42% advanced rated slopes make it a tasty proposition. The total of 34km of trails puts it at the smaller end of the European ski resort rankings, but size doesn't necessarily matter in the hunt for powder.

See here for the San Domenico ski trail map.

A plan to install a gondola from the base up to mid-mountain seems to be an on again/off again proposition at San Domenico. Until it goes ahead, a slow old double gets one up to the action with plenty of time to scope out the lay of the land and the gorgeous surrounds.

Lift Passes

Lift tickets at San Domenico are super affordable & awesome value for what is on offer. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends and purchasing online prior to arrival is cheaper again …….. just the way us tight-arse powder junkies like it!

Where is San Domenico Italy?

The San Domenico ski resort is in northern Piedmont (Piemonte) on the Italian side of Simplon Pass, near the border with Switzerland. Nestled high above the Divedro valley (a.k.a. Simplon valley, Simplontal or Val Divedro!), the nearest main town & train station are at Varzo, 11km by road to the south-east. The centre of Milan is less than 2hr (153km) drive away to the south-east of the ski area, or 3hr is avoiding the tolls on the motorways! The important Swiss transport hub of Brig is only 17km away to the north-west of San Domenico, but a round-about 60km drive (70min) via the 2,005m Simplon Pass.

The closest international gateway airport is Milan Malpensa (MXP), only 1½hr drive to the south. A private transfer direct from Milan Malpensa airport provides the most efficient way to visit San Domenico.

To save the planet, the recommended mode of travel to San Domenico is a combination of train & bus, though regional train services during the week can be extremely limited - planning is essential. From Brig, the regional train in the direction of Domodossola takes 21min to Varzo. Getting to Brig is easy from anywhere in Switzerland. From Milan Malpensa airport or central Milan, a convoluted journey of varying permutations usually involves two or three trains to get to Varzo via Busto Arsizio, Gallarate & Domodossola. Journeys can take from 3 to 5hr. From Varzo train station the route number 8 bus travels 5 to 6 times a day up to the ski resort, with the journey taking around 30 minutes.

Search & book here for train tickets to Varzo. Buy bus tickets from the driver or get a taxi up to San Domenico.

If hunting out a sneaky powder day, driving a rental car is easy from the Italian side, but a little more challenging via the Swiss side (over the Simplon Pass). Parking in the resort village is free and ample.
