Plose Ski Resort (a.k.a. Brixen Dolomites) Italy

Plose ski resort is perched high above the sensational Dolomites town of Bressanone (a.k.a. Brixen). Typical of a 'small' European ski resort, Plose has fantastic infrastructure, a huge skiable vertical of nearly 1,500m and one of the Dolomites longest and best advanced ski runs - the super-fast, super-fun Trametsch.

Whether you stay in Plose's main town of Bressanone (Brixen) or closer to the ski hill is the biggest question when skiing Plose. Exploring Bressanone's nooks and crannies is wonderful, as is the Christmas night market in late December to early January.

• Very good range of trails for all abilities.

• Interesting off piste & side-country including some tree skiing.
• Uncrowded during the week, no lift lines.
• Good value for money out of high season.
• Après ski starts early and is ‘enthusiastic’.
• Ski-in ski-out accommodation options available.
• Excellent variety of mountain huts and bars.

Cons

• Limited & crowded learn-to-ski areas for novices.
• Not a great recent natural snow record.
• Not a great value ski hill during high season.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)

• Small (ish) ski resort which may or may hold your interest for more than a few days.
• Majority of ski terrain south-facing & sunny.
• Best place to stay is away from the ski resort in the beautiful town of Bressanone.

Skiing & Snowboarding, Lifts & Terrain

Plose ski resort has a massive 1,480m+ vertical, over 41km of piste trails, a modern high-capacity lift system and a diversity of terrain for all ski and snowboard abilities. The main access gondola has been replaced for the 2023/24 season improving uphill transport efficiency.

If it snows, the Plose off-piste has some interesting descents for advanced skiers & snowboarders, plus a few side-country freeride ski routes to tickle the fancy off the summit of Gabler.

Interlinked with Gitschberg-Jochtal & Dolomiti Superski

Plose shares a lift pass with the nearby Gitschberg-Jochtal ski resort & is also part of the Dolomiti Superski ski region. Buying a Dolomiti Superski pass is of dubious value if only skiing locally.

International visitors may be pleased to know that Ikon Pass is valid in Brixen-Plose & the Dolomites, but with certain conditions/limitations.

Where is Plose Italy?

The Plose-Brixen ski resort is on the fringe of the fabulous Dolomites, 8km by road east of beautiful Brixen (Bressanone). The small town of Saint Andrea is just below the resort. Major cities nearby are Bolzano (50km south) and Innsbruck (100km north).

Gateway international airports are either Innsbruck (INN), Venice (VCE) or at a stretch, Munich (MUC) & Milan (MXP). The Powderhounds recommend taking the train & bus from the airports to Plose, but for those that just cannot abide public transport or are travelling in larger groups, the most efficient mode of travel is a private transfer. Search & book all direct private transfers to Bressanone & Plose.

Rail connections to Bressanone are excellent. Regular buses leave the centre of Bressanone & travel up to ski resort.

Plose-Brixen Accommodation

Several accommodation location options exist for Plose ski resort. For those that simply must stay on the hill, at least 3 alpine huts (Pfannspitzhütte et al) provide comfortable lodging above 2400m. Otherwise, two separate resort base locations with several hotels near Plancios are serviced by lifts directly to the ski slopes. Alternatively, the village of Saint Andrea has some great options, with several high-end luxury hotels being established in recent years.

If the snow is good, a stay in one of the alpine huts at the top of the ski resort gives an authentic angle to your ski holiday & first tracks!

Activities

Plose is a wonderful holiday location because of its non-ski activity options. These include the 9km long 'Rudi Run' toboggan trail and bountiful winter walking trails.

The city of Bressanone has a range of historic sites in its two 'old towns' to explore and in late December to early January, has a wonderful night market, ice skating and a live sound & light show in the Bishop's Palace.

Nearby Ski Resorts

Near the heart of the Dolomites and not far from Innsbruck, Plose-Brixen is close to number of ski resorts. The largest by a country mile is Val Gardena at Ortisei (30km by car, bus, or train & bus) & the massive Kronplatz (37km by car or train to Brunico).

Review

The Powderhounds reviewed Plose several years ago during a very lean early season, but still managed to have a fantastic time. Since then they have changed the name of the ski hill to Brixen ….. fair enough, but nothing much else has changed, except for a new gondola which we will check out this coming season.
