Eagle Point Ski Resort

Eagle Point Resort in Southern Utah is the complete antithesis of the high profile ski resorts near Salt Lake City. Utah ski resorts such as Park City, Deer Valley, and Snowbird are household names in the ski industry and receive lots of well deserved recognition because they have world class facilities and world class snow, which is the “Greatest Snow on Earth” - so great is the Utah snow that it’s trademarked! But along with all the accolades comes fierce competition for the powder, crowds, high prices, and sometimes a bit of attitude. Little known Eagle Point also has the famous Utah powder that's the Greatest Snow on Earth, but in contrast it is blissfully uncrowded, unspoiled, inexpensive and very down to earth.

Due to its southern Utah location, Eagle Point Ski Resort is frequented by folks from Las Vegas, Southern California, Arizona, St George and Cedar City, as well as Salt Lake City. However for other domestic and international travellers it is a great destination resort to combine with Las Vegas. Party your arse off in Las Vegas for a few days, drive only 3.5 hours, and then stay at Eagle Point Resort to chill out and detox. Sure you could drive 3 hours from Las Vegas to Brian Head Ski Resort, but if you head to Eagle Point instead, you’ll be rewarded with a more affordable experience, even fewer crowds, and better advanced terrain.

Pros and Cons of Eagle Point Utah

Pros
  • Unlike at some of the other Utah ski resorts, there’s no frantic competition for the powder and no waiting in lift lines.
  • The lodging is very reasonably priced, lessons and rentals are relatively inexpensive, and lift tickets are cheap.
  • Inclusive beginner packages are very economical, and combined with the lack of crowds and good beginner terrain, Eagle Point is a great place to learn to ski or snowboard.
  • If you are looking for super steeps reminiscent of Snowbird, then you should go to Snowbird. However if you’re after well pitched fall-line black runs, Eagle Point excels (much better than Brian Head).
  • Mid-week you can book out Eagle Point as your own private ski resort!
  • Eagle Point scores plenty of the world renowned, dry desert Utah powder.
Cons
  • Eagle Point is just a little bit further afield from Las Vegas compared with Brian Head, but this added remoteness includes benefits such as reduced costs and less skier traffic.
  • There are no fancy fast lifts and the connection between the two parts of the Eagle Point ski area is rather clunky.
  • The terrain is not particularly large, so skiers and snowboarders who get bored easily may get bored easily!
Pro or Con Depending On Your Perspective
  • The ski resort is only open to the public Friday to Monday for some parts of the season, so check the resort calendar and plan your powder assault.
  • Eagle Point is a reasonably sleepy hollow. Other than the skiing and snowboarding and a bit of snowshoeing, there aren’t a lot of extra-curricular activities.

Where is Eagle Point Resort?

Eagle Point Ski Resort is located in the Tushar Mountains in Southern Utah, only 19 miles east of the little town of Beaver (population 3,000 and home town of Butch Cassidy), with easy access off the I-15. Eagle Point is 242 miles (a 3.5 hour scenic drive) northeast of Las Vegas and 218 miles (3 hours) south of Salt Lake City. The closest ski resort is Brian Head which is 66 miles to the southwest.

You’ll need to self-drive to get to Eagle Point Utah. Car rentals are available in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas.

Eagle Point Lodging

On-mountain lodging at Eagle Point consists of some very affordable condos that are ski-in ski-out or very close to it. From the condos you can walk to the Canyonside Lodge for dinner and drinks, but otherwise there isn’t much to the village. Eagle Point is delightfully low key so don’t have expectations of boutiques, wine bars, and day spas.

A little further from the slopes are various vacation homes. Both the condos and vacation homes can be booked via Eagle Point Resort.

Alternatively you can stay in Beaver (19 miles away) where there are some great value for money motels and hotels.

Ski Resort Facilities

Eagle Point has two fully renovated day lodges that house most of the ski resort facilities and services.

The upper lodge, Skyline Lodge, is at the top of the Skyline lift. It has a cafeteria serving up pretty traditional ski resort nosh, and also ski and snowboard equipment rentals, first aid, a small retail shop, and snowsports school. Group ski lessons are for adults and children ages 4 and up, and snowboard lessons for ages 7 and up.

The Canyonside Lodge, located at the top of the chair of the same name, holds the Outpost Grille and Lounge which is open during the day and into the evening hours.

And at the top of Tushar Ridge is The Lookout, a warming station that affords spectacular 360 degree views that include the nearby 12K+ feet peaks.
