Reno Nevada is located near Lake Tahoe and is a popular base for skiers and snowboarders to visit the “Reno ski resorts”. Like Las Vegas, Reno Nevada is renowned for its casinos, but instead of being a place to get married, it became famous in the 1930s for the place to get a divorce!
With a population of about 233,000, it’s known as “The Biggest Little City in the World” which is announced to all the tourists via the famous arch sign over Virginia Street.
Reno might lack the glitz of Las Vegas (and even
South Lake Tahoe), but it’s a great option for those who love casinos and Reno lodging provides great value for money. Somewhat surprisingly, Reno has become a popular ski vacation destination for families.
Where is Reno Nevada?
Reno is situated in the far western part of Nevada, not far from the California state border. Reno is only 37 miles by road from the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe (at
Incline Village) and 60 miles northeast of
South Lake Tahoe.
The Reno Tahoe International Airport is the most common gateway airport for the
Lake Tahoe ski resorts, and is only 5 miles from downtown Reno.
Reno Ski Resorts
There are lots of pawn shops in case you lose big at the Reno casinos, but don’t try to sell your skis or snowboard because you’ll need them. Any of the many Lake Tahoe ski resorts are easily accessible from Reno, as well as the various cross country skiing spots. Reno skiing provides a stark contrast to the vibrant nightlife of the city.
Mt Rose is the closest ski resort to Reno. Mt Rose Ski Tahoe (as it's officially known) has a great family vibe and is largely a locals’ ski area. There’s no lodging on-mountain so most stay in Reno lodging; only a 25 minute drive away.
You can also ski Reno at Diamond Peak which is fantastic for beginners and is also very family oriented. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is a little past Mt Rose (37 miles away).

Reno Lodging
Reno casinos are the main form of lodging. There are a handful of upscale casinos as well as various standard casinos that provide good quality accommodation at very reasonable prices (especially on weekdays) and classic inexpensive casino buffets and restaurants. There are also various Reno hotels, motels and casinos that provide dirt cheap lodging.
The
Atlantis Casino Resort Spa is a luxury 5 star Reno hotel casino that often has very reasonably priced hotel rooms on weekdays. The casino and restaurants are classy and there are facilities for children such as swimming pools and a games arcade.
The Silver Legacy Resort Casino is a 4 star Reno hotel with a range of rooms. It’s conveniently located on the main street, and in addition to the large on-site casino, it provides easy to access to various other Reno casinos.
Circus Circus is another casino hotel (3 star) located on the mini strip. It offers inexpensive hotel rooms that are very large but a little on the tacky side. Circus Circus offers free valet parking and a games arcade.
