Hokkaido Backcountry Tour

The Hokkaido Backcountry Tour is designed for experienced backcountry tourers that want to get out and see Japan’s wilds. You can expect to conquer some of Hokkaido’s highest and most iconic peaks. From the Daistesu National Park in Central Hokkaido (near Furano) to the crater of Mt Yotei near Niseko, this tour will go where the snow is and hike to find the best untouched lines.

You have the option the join the scheduled date group tour, or if you have your own group you can request a private customised private backcountry trip which will be dependent on guide availability.

For the first 5 nights you will be based out of Furano, Hokkaido’s emerging backcountry capital. From there you’ll chase the best conditions whilst exploring the Daisetsu Mountain Range in Central Hokkaido which includes Kurodake, Asahidake and Tokachidake and is home to some of the most amazing Hokkaido backcountry skiing. This is Japan skiing and snowboarding at its absolute finest! There are endless options in this area as well as countless onsens to soak in after rewarding hikes and long deep runs.

From Furano you'll head to world famous Niseko where the group can chase the storms rolling in from the Sea of Japan or Pacific, far away from the all the hordes at Niseko Ski Resort. There might also be the option of a few car drops/pick-ups when the legs need a little rest.

The Hokkaido Backcountry Tour has been conceived from listening to past clients who wanted more days in Hokkaido’s backcountry, with nine nights and up to eight days on snow. Bring your maximum energy and fitness because the group will be out for multi day runs, all under your own leg power to get away from the crowds and explore further. All this will be fully guided by the most experienced guides.

The guides will also take you to some great restaurants to sample delicious local food.

With a maximum of 4-8 people on the tour, it’ll be just you, the deep Japanese powder and endless opportunity.

If you would like to book this trip or have any questions you can make a booking request here.

Ability Level

This tour is suited to skiers and split boarders (no snowshoes) with advanced to expert ability riding in powder and at least several seasons of touring experience and a high level of fitness.

This tour requires that you must be able to ski the whole mountain with confidence and at speed in powder, through trees and in variable conditions. You must also have a very good level of fitness. Snowboarders must be able to keep speed in all situations as well as hold a high traverse line. Please make a an honest assessment of your abilities whilst keeping fitness in mind as to not slow the group down. Touring equipment required is either AT skis or split-boards.

Lots of freshies to be had...

...but you will earn your turns...

...and the rewards endless.

This itinerary is an example of tour#1. The tour will be run largely by the weather and each day will fit around where the best conditions are. This is the beauty of such a tour.

Each year Southern Hokkaido is blanketed in up to 18 metres of some of the driest snow on the planet. Expect to explore Goshiki Onsen area, Yoichi-dake behind Kiroro, the backcountry of Kokusai as well as climbing iconic peaks like Mt Yotei and its sister mountain Shirebetsu-dake. This tour is laid out for those that wish to have a true Japanese backcountry adventure. After chasing the the snow gods all day you will rest your legs in soothing onsens and head out to eat some of the best local cuisine on offer.

DAY 5 (transfer day)

Time to check out and take the scenic transfer from Niseko to Furano. As it is a 4+ hour drive this is usually your rest day. You’ll stop in Sapporo on the way to enjoy Hokkaido’s capital, including the Sapporo Beer Hall or the Snow Festival. If the snow is dumping and you don’t want to rest you have the option of a multitude of backcountry zones along the way. That night you check into the boutique Hotel Munin in Furano.

DAY 6 – 9 (touring days Central Hokkaido)

There is so much on offer in the Central Hokkaido region it’ll be hard to pick. Your guides will do their best to choose the areas with the best conditions that day as well as ensuring you stay safe and have fun. Expect to explore Furano’s epic backcountry, tour up the volcano that is Asahidake, hike out the back of Kurodake into its endless terrain or summit Tokachidake followed by a long soak in one of its mountain onsens. Furano is also home to some delicious restaurants and Izakayas. It’ll be hard to leave.

DAY 10 (check-out and departure day)
