6 Day British Columbia Ski Tour

Kicking Horse Activities

There are quite a few activities at Kicking Horse Resort and Golden, and the opportunity to enjoy the traditional winter alternatives like cross-country skiing, ice-climbing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, dog sled rides, snow tubing and ice-skating.

Golden Heli Skiing

Skiing or snowboarding at Kicking Horse is fun, but if you want fresh powder all day there is the option of heli skiing.

Alternatively Chatter Creek, the largest cat skiing operation in the world is located near Golden and could be combined with a Kicking Horse ski trip. Chatter Creek provides phenomenal 3, 4 and 5 day powder skiing holidays. The cat skiing books out nearly a year in advance (and previous guests get the first opportunity to book for the following year) so you’ve got to be pretty lucky to get in.

Cross Country Skiing

Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre offers 33km of cross country trails. The day-use Nordic chalet is located about 1km from the gondola, where you can pay trail fees, get equipment rentals, or even a lesson.

Interweaving the Nordic trails are snowshoe trails (rentals available at the Nordic centre) and fat biking is another possibility.

Other Kicking Horse Ski Activities

Adrenalin Descents offer backcountry ski guiding and avalanche and ski touring skills training in the Dogtooth mountain range of Kicking Horse Country & the Selkirks. They also offer sled skiing tours, custom backcountry trips to nearby Rogers Pass, and daily off-piste guiding from Kicking Horse Resort.

Kids Activities Kicking Horse

The base area of Kicking Horse Resort has a tubing park that is serviced by a surface lift. Tubing is free for children up to 12 years of age, although kids under 1.1m height are not permitted in the tubing park.

There is also a mini ice skating rink that’s suitable for tiny tots, and night skiing via a magic carpet for novices is available.

Adventure Activities

The nearby Kicking Horse Canyons and Yoho National Park are renowned for ice climbing, and there are guides to show you the “ropes”. There are a couple of Golden snowmobiling tour companies, or dog sledding is another option.

Leisure Activities

Non-skiers can purchase a pedestrian pass to head up the Kicking Horse gondola to enjoy the fabulous views and potentially partake in a fabulous lunch at the Eagle Eye Restaurant.

The Grizzly Bear Refuge at Kicking Horse can be seen from the gondola or from one of the ski runs. During summer it’s a large enclosure, but during winter you can see the orphan “Boo” in his small pen only if he comes out of hibernation early. No longer a cub, Boo is impressive to see up close and has probably had thousands of photographs taken of him.

Another popular activity is a visit to the Northern Lights Wolf Centre located a little out of Golden. It’s a very inexpensive outing, and to use a common cliché, you’ll have a howling good time!

Day Spa

If you’ve been kicked by the horse, you can head to the day spa at Winston Lodge for a massage.
