Where is Breckenridge Colorado?

The Breckenridge ski resort sits above and to the west of the town of Breckenridge. Breckenridge is located 80 miles (129km) west of Denver and 104 miles (166km) from Denver International Airport.

Breckenridge Colorado is situated in Summit County on Co Highway 9, about 10 miles from the I-70 and the town of Frisco Colorado.

Flying

Denver Airport to Breckenridge Shuttle

If you’re just visiting Breckenridge, it’s probably easiest to use a Denver to Breckenridge shuttle service, because once you’re there you won’t need a car.

There is an array of private transport companies providing very regular shuttle van services (ie every hour), or private transfers between the Denver airport and your Breckenridge lodging.

It’s also possible to get a Greyhound bus from the airport to Frisco, and then use the Summit Stage coach bus to get to Breckenridge.

Driving to Breckenridge

Alternatively it’s very easy to rent a car in Denver or at Denver International Airport and drive to Breckenridge. You can use one of our car rental search engines to find a good deal and make a reservation.

The drive from Denver takes about 1.5 hours, and from Denver International Airport about 2 hours. Drive times can vary significantly depending on the weather, road conditions and traffic. Due to the high concentration of ski resorts around Summit County and Vail, there can be horrendous traffic on weekends and holidays, especially on a powder day.

Occasionally severe storms can close the I-70, but it’s usually not closed for very long.

Parking

For day trippers there are parking lots near the BreckConnect Gondola that attract a hefty fee, with higher rates on weekends and holidays. The parking lots are huge so there can be a bit of a hike to get to the gondola.

There is also paid parking up near Beaver Run at Peak 9 which is much more convenient but costs a little more. Both sets of parking have a discounted car pooling incentive.

Free parking is available in the Airport Road lot, with a free shuttle to take you to the gondola.

For vacationers, most accommodations provide parking for a fee. If you’re staying up on the mountain and want to travel down to the town of Breckenridge, be aware that parking in town can be somewhat tricky, particularly on the weekends. You’re better off catching a shuttle between your lodging and town.

Orientation to Breckenridge and Getting Around Breckenridge

Downtown Breckenridge is reasonably compact and it’s pretty easy to get around on foot. Some parts of town are very close to chair lifts whilst other areas require a 10 minute walk to get to the lifts. As an alternative, regular Free Ride buses provide transport around the downtown areas and to the ski slopes, operating 6am to midnight.

The Peak 9 area is where the Beaver Run Resort is located. This is about 10-15 minutes walk up the hill from downtown. The Beaver Run Resort has a regular shuttle bus service to connect the two areas that runs from 7am to 2am.

The Peak 8 base area has the One Ski Hill accommodations. It’s not really walking distance between downtown Breckenridge and Peak 8. The two areas are connected by the BreckConnect gondola during the daytime, and in the evenings One Ski Hill runs a shuttle service to and from town.

The Peak 7 base area also has a couple of large accommodations, and similarly isn’t really within walking distance of town. The BreckConnect gondola provides transport between town and Peak 7 during the day, whilst a shuttle service is available in the evenings.

Getting Around Summit County

Free transport via the Summit Stage buses is available to and from the towns of Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne, as well as Keystone ski resort and Copper Mountain.

Other Summit County Ski Resorts

Summit County has a high concentration of ski resorts.

Keystone Ski Resort is about 14 miles away (30 minutes) from Breckenridge by road. Keystone is also owned by Vail Resorts and can be accessed off the same lift pass.

Arapahoe Basin is a little further along the Loveland Pass Road, a 22 mile (40 minute) drive.

Copper Mountain is located right on the I-70, an 18 mile drive (20 minutes) away.

The low key Loveland Ski Area is about 16 miles from Breckenridge, located near the town of Georgetown on the East side of the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Also nearby is the massive Vail Ski Resort, 37 miles away (40 minute drive), and Beaver Creek (47 miles – 50 minutes). Both ski resorts are also owned by Vail Resorts and accessible on the same lift ticket. There are various shuttle services that operate between Breckenridge and Vail and Beaver Creek.
