Perito Moreno Ski and Snowboard Terrain
The Perito Moreno ski area can be loosely categorised into three vertical parts. The lower third is serviced by a slow double chair lift and has a long intermediate run and a beginner trail that snakes its way down the mountain. It is common that this zone has negligible snow, so you may need to download at the end of the day.
The mid-zone of the
Perito Moreno ski area is also below the treeline and features a handful of runs, plus tree skiing when the snow is good.
The upper third is above the tree line and it has a large mellow plateau for beginners, plus a surface lift that services a couple of more pitchy runs.
Lifts
Perito Moreno has one long double chair lift that runs from the base and can be downloaded if necessary. There is another slow double chair in the mid zone, and the rest of the lift fleet consists of surface lifts, which are slow and have limited T-bars or pomas loaded onto them, so the lifting capacity is minimal. Even with small visitation numbers, it doesn’t take much for long lift queues to develop.
Lift Tickets
Lift tickets at Perito Moreno are cheap, but the price tag is probably in line with the facilities and infrastructure on offer.
Perito Moreno Snow
The mild weather conditions that are great for growing fruit and hops in El Bolson are not particularly conducive to snow quantity or quality up at Perito Moreno. Other factors that don’t bode well for Perito Moreno include slopes that sit in the sun most of the morning, the lower slopes don’t have much elevation, and the ski resort can’t cheat because they don’t have any snow making cannons.
For the Beginner
The new terrain at Perito Moreno has expanded the ski area’s offerings for beginners significantly. A run in the mid-zone around the 1,400 metre base has been appropriately upgraded to an intermediate run, whilst the main beginner zone is now up at the 1,700 metre base. A couple of the runs are so mellow that they may require a bit of poling or skating.
Intermediate Skiing and Snowboarding
Perito Moreno has a couple of good groomed runs in the mid-zone and the top lift also has a few intermediate runs.
There was an intermediate run in the lower zone of the ski area, but this has been removed from the trail map in recent years.
Terrain Park
A very small terrain park is sometimes set up near the 1,400 metre base that might have a couple of rails and a sketchy jump.
Advanced Skiing at Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno has a couple of black piste runs that might keep you entertained for a little while. The upper zone also has bits and pieces of off-piste and the slopes off the Teleski Plateau Oeste have a good aspect that are conducive for decent snow.
Further down, you can head off-piste in the trees when the snow conditions are good. The trees range from widely spaced and are suitable for advanced riders. There is a small zone between El Muro and Leo Rudolph that is gnarly and includes a big ravine and small cliffs, so advanced riders will want to avoid this area.
Perito Moreno Backcountry
There are some backcountry opportunities above the ski area. There are various small hills that offer mellow ski touring opportunities as well as a mountain that offers much pitchier terrain.
