Japan Ski Tours (also known as JST) Terms & Conditions

Updated for 24/25 Season

Please carefully read the policies below before you make a reservation.

Payments

A 50% deposit will secure your reservation. Once the deposit is received, the remaining balance must be paid within two months of the trip departure date. Once we receive your full payment, we will email you a copy of the receipt.

Credit card payments may be made through our secure website via Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Cancellation

Once we receive written notification that you are canceling your trip the following fees will apply.

  • Of the total price of the reservation, a fee of 25% will be charged for all cancellations made more than 4 months before the start of your trip.
  • Cancellations made between 2 and 4 months prior to the start of your program will be charged a 50% fee.
  • Cancellations made with less than two months of advanced notice will not be refunded.

Unfortunately, due to the time sensitive nature of our business, and the difficulty in re-booking a trip close to the departure date, we cannot make exceptions to this policy.

Responsibility and dependence on suppliers

Japan Ski Tours cannot be held responsible for snow conditions. Trips cannot be cancelled or amended on the basis of snow conditions. No refunds will be made if you voluntarily leave a trip for any reason after the trip has begun. Refunds will be at the discretion of JST if you are involuntarily forced to leave a trip for any reason. No refunds will be given for any accommodation, transport, sightseeing, meals, services, lift tickets or any component of the trip not utilized. JST acts only as an agent for the other companies providing or offering accommodation, lift tickets and other services and as such has no control over any services or products provided by these supplying companies.

All bookings made are subject to the booking terms and conditions under which these services are provided. JST and its suppliers reserve the right, without liability or right of compensation, to prohibit or restrict any activity, or cancel or alter any service or itinerary component, without notice.

JST will not be held responsible for the inability of the suppliers to comply with any special request relating to age, medical conditions, physical ability or disability, dietary requirements, allergic conditions, smoking or non-smoking accommodation.

Cancellation by JST

JST reserves the right to cancel any trip prior to departure, including a confirmed trip, due to circumstances beyond our control. If this occurs you will be given the option of changing to another trip or receiving a full refund. JST is not responsible for any incidental expense you have incurred as a result of your booking (i.e., airline tickets, equipment purchase or third party equipment rentals, hotel reservations, etc). If you choose an alternative trip and it is at a lower value than your original trip you will be refunded the difference. If the alternative trip is of a higher value then you will pay the difference in price.

If Japan Ski Tours cancels a trip due to an act of God such as a natural disaster, volcanic eruption, or other unforeseeable naturally occurring event which impedes the safety of our program, the terms under the section, “In the event of an act of God such as a natural disaster, or any other unforeseeable naturally occurring event that destabilizes or otherwise makes skiing unsafe” will apply.

What Storm Chasing means

While we do "storm chase" as much as possible, we are constrained by the limitations of our itinerary and hotel reservations. There may be instances where we have to leave our base accommodation and move to the next area as soon as a storm is coming in. If you're not willing to run the risk that the timing of the itinerary might not work with the storm systems during your trip, your best bet is to rent a Camper Van and travel around in real-time with the storms. Since our trips aren't Camper Van based, we'll be following our itinerary as described on our website and storm chasing within those limitations.

Change of Date

Date changes are subject to availability. Date changes may be requested at anytime up to 2 months prior to your departure date. Date changes made between 2-3 months prior to the trip will be charged a ¥15,000 fee per person. A ¥10,000 fee will be charged per person for all date changes made more than 3 months prior to the trip.

Medical and Emergency Evacuation Insurance

Due to the inherent risk involved in alpine pursuits, and in the interest of your safety, Japan Ski Tours strongly recommends all participants to bring insurance that provides full medical and emergency evacuation coverage. Japan Ski Tours will NOT provide insurance for participants on any JST trip. If a participant does not have proper insurance documentation he/she will be liable for her own medical and emergency evacuation expenses and will receive no refund, date change, or any kind of compensation from Japan Ski Tours. Please take this seriously and lean on the side of caution.

Hazard Management and Skier Responsibilities

Managing risk is JST’s number one priority. Our guides manage significant hazards inherent to sidecountry pursuits (e.g. avalanche, inclement weather, tee-accidents, rock fall, and high winds) but they cannot eliminate them. Please clearly understand that skiing in bounds and out of bounds is an inherently hazardous sport and both actions are only undertaken with the full knowledge and consent from the participant that these are inherently dangerous activities. You are choosing to engage in an activity in which skiers have been injured and worse. While these accidents are indeed infrequent, they may occur at any time and be out of our control. We ask that participants acknowledge that risk, and make their own choices about whether or not to engage in this activity. We ask that each participant is physically and mentally fit, is properly attired and equipped, and continues to assess him/her-self throughout the trip to ensure as safe a time as possible. We ask that participants honestly and accurately describe themselves, in terms of fitness, health and skills, and their equipment to their guides, and that they adhere to the advice of their guide.

In the event of an act of God such as a natural disaster, or any other unforeseeable naturally occurring event that destabilizes or otherwise makes skiing unsafe

Other natural disasters or naturally occurring disruptive events: In the event of any other natural disaster or unforeseeable act of God which makes skiing in Japan unsafe, impedes or cancels transportation or route infrastructure on, to, or from partner ski resorts or Japan, all cancelled clients will receive a 50% refund or a 75% credit towards a future trip when skiing in Japan is made safe again.

Once in a lifetime experience!

I did the Hokkaido Storm Chaser trip in February of 2024. I can't say enough good things about the overall experience. The lodging was great and very comfortable. Our guides were very knowledgeable about the area and found powder stashes that I would not have found (or taken me all day to find). They were very flexible and made sure everybody in the group was having a good time without slowing down some of the more expert skiers. The places that they took us for dinner were excellent and gave us a great variety of places and foods to choose from. I really don't have any complaints and would highly recommend this to anybody that wants to experience Japan skiing or snowboarding!

JST 10 Day Indy Trip

I joined this tour hoping to avoid crowded resorts overrun with foreigners. This tour delivered exactly that and completely met my expectations. The company was a pleasure to deal with and they seem to be really engaged in their work and always acted with integrity. Our host (it is not "guided" as such, rather you are escorted from resort to resort with a host present to make it all happen smoothly), was fantastic. She was knowledgeable, personable, well-organised and fun.

The resorts ranged from very small to mid-sized and I enjoyed each one of them. I found the Tohoku region very enjoyable and interesting. I had been not looking forward to the various bus trips between resorts, but it turned out to be a highlight as the scenery was amazing and so interesting.

The staff at all of the hotels were very helpful and the hotels were comfortable and clean. All of them had onsens and we made use of these every night.

I think the cost is very fair considering it includes all transfers, a host, lift tickets (for non-Indy pass holders) and breakfast and dinner each day, which were generally of excellent standard.

I would not hesitate to book this trip again. Note the schedule is quite demanding but there is opportunity to take a rest day any time you feel like it.

We have been on this tour twice (2020 and 2023). Snow was low in '20 but we still had plenty of fun, on and off piste, that we came back in 2023. Love the guides and the knowledge they have of all the resorts we visited. Are looking forward to coming back in 2025!!

Unbelievable Trip

Cam Bennett
27/06/2023
I had heard plenty about the Japanese skiing experience but never been before this trip, but now I'm a convert - I've already re-booked the same trip for next year. Even setting aside our unbelievable powder luck (at least a foot of fresh every day), the trip was amazing, from the tiny mountain onsen visit, to the fantastic food, to the friendly and professional guides.

One important thing to understand about this trip is that you'll be visiting resorts you would never have discovered otherwise. Most of them are pretty small and a bit dated, with almost no Western visitors, and honestly not that many Japanese visitors either. Coming from Tahoe, where you might sit in traffic on 89 for hours before getting turned away at the parking log, it was pretty crazy pulling up to a resort after it had dumped 18 inches the night before and seeing less than 50 cars in the lot. The upside to all of this is the lack of competition for fresh powder. The combination of the expertise of the guides and the remoteness of the resorts means that you'll ski untracked lines the entire trip, conditions permitting.

What a tour!

13/03/2023
I feel very fortunate to have stumbled across this tour from a google search, all I knew was that I wanted to get out to Japan to go snowboarding. Travelling on my own I didn't really know what to expect however, I could not have been happier with the outcome. Chris was awesome from the pickup to final day drop off and the guides who joined us along the way were great fun and knew exactly where to find the best snow... the group was well matched and we all got on really well, which you always hope for but was exactly what we got on this tour. I would highly recommend Japan Ski Tours and will definitely be going back!

Japan backcountry powder ski trip report sent to Jackson Hole and Mt Hood race group....

Good Morning from Northern Japan…
Just a quick text from Aomori Japan (the snowiest city in the world). where I am finishing an 8 day powder and backcountry ski trip with a Japanese ski tour operator.
Overall the experience has been fabulous, and I cannot recommend a Japan powder ski trip enough. I have never seen so much snow, and in fact we did not have any non snowing days during my 10 day visit. It would regularly drop 12 to 18 inches of fresh cold Siberian snow every night, and after a week of this, I managed to handle skiing two to three feet of fresh powder on every run. The ski areas are not large by Western standards, and few if any runs are groomed. The food is of course very Japanese, with fish and sea creatures part of every meal. Few Japanese in the far North speak English, to include at the hotels, but everyone gets by. Most of the Gaijin (foreigners) skiers were from Australia, with a few Americans and Europeans just behind. Everyone is here for the powder, and backcountry ski touring with a local guide is how most people go about it. I booked my 8 day trip with Japan Ski Tours, and the ski package ran roughly $2700, which included hotels, lifts, snowcat, and the guides.I did end up having to rent some backcountry skis (with skins), since I rarely have the opportunity to for this type of skiing. This type of skiing experience is extraordinarily rewarding, but physically demanding. Show up with an open and adventurous mindset, a good state of physical conditioning, and you will have fabulous ski experience.
I shall see everyone at either Jackson Hole, Mt Hood, or Alta during the next few months…

Bad Timing, Great Trip!

We happened to schedule this trip during a rare mid-January warm spell, so the skiing was mostly dust-on-crust, rainy, wet, heavy snow. Nevertheless, it was a great intro to many little ski areas that we were able to see and explore more than if it was puking. Rare January vistas of the peaks were one benefit, and the travel was easy. I never wore my storm parka. This was my 4th ski trip to Japanuary, and the odds of finding deep Japow caught up with me on this trip.
The itinerary was expertly planned and executed from north to south with improving accommodations every two days. Our host was invaluable and helped with logistics and language throughout the trip, and our fellow riders were most congenial. Highly recommended.

Tohoku Storm Chaser Review

Richard Lucas
14/02/2023
Hi there,
Our group of 7 had the most amazing 7 day trip in late January/early February 2023.
Doug and Steve are fantastic guides who could not be faulted for their meticulous planning of every aspect of the trip from safety on the mountain, local knowldge of powder stashes, where to find the best freshes, safe driving, compaionship and friendliness and identifying and leading us to many great restaurants, onzens and other cultural items along the way.
Most of the small local mountains we skied were virtually empty so we were able to get more than our share of fresh tracks. We had a big week also in terms of snow with many opportunities to ski bottomless Japow.
Everyone enjoyed the trip with ages of our group ranging from 22 years (our sons) to 70. Everyone was fit enough for what is quite a demanding schedule.
My only slight reservation was a quoted guide to skier ratio or 1:4 however we had a group of 7 with a front and tail guide that was too large for the terain. 2 groups of 3-4 would have been better.

Great Food, Great Skiing. Exactly as advertised. They take you to great sidecountry powder and great restaurants. Guides were friendly and fun. Hotels were great. Food was delicious. Even though there weren't the 2' dumps of my dreams, the skiing and snow was excellent.
Note for those of you who have never been skiing in Japan -- the terrain is all mellow trees with fantastic powder. If that's not your jam, look elsewhere.

We hired 3 days of guiding in the Tohoku area, but due to an uncommon heat wave we changed our plans and stayed up north in the Aomori region, skiing Aomori Spring and Mt. Hakkoda. Japan Ski Tours provided a certified Canadian guide (go Andrew) and he guided us to amazing spots. Despite less-than-average snowfall in the area, we still had about 20-30cms of new powder every day. If you want to discover the 'real' Japan, Tohoku and Aomori are 100% worth it! It's also quite easy to ride the bullet train from Morioka or Aomori up to Hokkaido.

Best Japan Tour We've Been On

18/03/2020
Our tail guide Taro pouring a sake in a Hachimantai onsen
Hakkoda on a rare fine day in January
One of the amazing dinners
A phenomenal onsen experience in Aomori Prefecture
Our guide finding plenty of pow stashes
It was rather sad when this incredible trip in northern Tohoku came to an end!! We’ve done quite a few ski tours in Japan with different companies, and whilst it wasn’t the best or deepest snow we’ve experienced (as it wasn’t the greatest season), overall it was the best tour we’ve been on. It was the combination of unique experiences, having fun guides that understood the culture and spoke fluent Japanese so they could easily navigate some great dining and onsen options, and our luck in being grouped with solid skiers who were all on the same page, entertaining, and lovely, considerate people. Staying in cities was also a highlight, rather than getting a “resort-ified” experience by staying at a ski resort.

The tour was fabulous and we’d highly recommend it.

Skiing:
Whilst Japan generally had been experiencing a low snow year, northern Tohoku was faring slightly better than other parts of Japan, and JST managed to find us great untracked powder each day of the tour, even if we had to work a little harder than usual to get to the goods.

There was plenty of variety with respect to the skiing which included some backcountry touring, lift-accessed off-piste and sidecountry, road pick-ups, and a few snowcat runs.

We had 4 different JST guides during the trip, and they were all were pretty relaxed & had a sense of fun whilst also having a good focus on safety considerations. One of the guides at times needed to pre-empt guests’ many questions, whilst the others made it very clear what the plans were. It was pretty impressive that we always had a tail guide (or 2) & Taro filled us in on fascinating insights into Japan. At Hakkoda there are all sorts of interesting guiding politics that go on, so we had to have a local Hakkoda lead guide who wasn’t particularly impressive compared to the JST guides, but thankfully we also had 2 JST guides with us to fill in the blanks.

The Shizukuishi cat skiing was a fantastically fun morning. See our Shizukuishi cat skiing review for more information, but essentially if you go on the Shizukuishi cat without JST guiding, you won’t be allowed to play in the trees.

Eating:
Staying in the cities of Morioka and Aomori gave the guides plenty of dining options to choose from, and their choice of restaurants each night was nothing less than extraordinary! The week started off simply with a yakiniku restaurant (grilled meats), tonkatsu restaurant, and noodles. And then it was full Japanese cultural immersion with a sushi restaurant, kaiseki (multi-course) dinner with a sedate shamisen player, and then another amazing multi-course dinner with a funky upbeat shamisen show.

The breakfasts at the hotels were also very good and provided a lovely balance between Japanese fare and western items.

Morioka in particular had a huge array of bars. The nightlife tended to only really come alive on the weekends but there was a cool bar near the hotel that attracted the only gaijin in town.

Onsen:
The onsen the guides chose for our 2nd daily soaks were really unique. Instead of shiny modern onsen, they chose old traditional onsen, many of which had the option of mixed gender bathing or ladies-only bathing. There was also variety with respect to indoor and outdoor baths, and the pièce de résistance was an ocean side rotenburo where we watched the waves crashing in front of us.

Organisation:
The administration of JST was highly organised. The registration process ensured that we had our expectations appropriately set, the pre-trip documentation was comprehensive, and the arrival day information was great.

One of the huge pros of JST is that it’s run by bilingual guides who grew up in Japan and live in Japan year-round. They have a mix of Japanese, Japanese/western and western guides, and are really well connected in with the locals at the destinations visited.

JAPOW off the beaten path

05/03/2020
Background: This was our third snow trip to Japan. Having already done Hakuba/Nagano and both central and southern Hokkaido (twice) we were ready to check out a new region - enter Japan Ski Tours "Frontier Explorer" itinerary.

Initially I had hoped to do what I usually do on snow chasing trips - gather our own group of friends, hire a private guide for our ski/snowboard days, and mimic a solid itinerary but book all my lodging, etc on our own. This was the solid itinerary. As it turned out I couldn't rally any friends this year so my husband and I went out on a limb and joined this set group tour...fingers crossed we would get a solid group of skiers/snowboarders and would like the pace of the more set itinerary.

Spoiler alert - we loved it! I am so used to doing all the logistics for my group that it was such a treat to be able to sit back and let Japan Ski Tours and their capable team take care of everything. Of our three trips to Japan the snow was the most touch and go on this trip...something we knew before we left. I am only saying this because I see some of the previous reviews seemed to have knocked Japan Ski Tours for this. This is totally out of a guiding company's control. Japan has the most reliable snow in the world but that doesn't mean it's perfect.

Through the expertise of the JST team we managed to stretch some favorable storms just before our trip and a surprise big storm day on our first day into four epic powder days in the Tohoku region. They knew exactly where to go to find the stashes (even 3 days post storm). Upon moving up to our second base area for days 5 and 6, we were able to find a few fresh lines, despite the lack of any notable fresh snow, again, with the expertise of our JST team. We really only got skunked on our 6th and final day and Daniel...our amazing round-the-clock guide, driver, coordinator, translator, hand holder, and local expert still worked his hardest to find us anything skiable. We did have to throw in the towel a touch early on this very last day because mother nature was just not cooperating...but he made sure the rest of the day was filled with as much activity and cultural experiences as the group wanted. Speaking of the cultural aspect, the added bonus of having a built in local expert, who just so happened to also be our guide, knowing exactly which onsen to take us to each day post skiing and with awesome dinners arranged for us each night, was such an added highlight I didn't appreciate nearly enough when booking this trip. This added bonus was just off the charts, particularly for this region of japan which is very much not

Having done many, many, many international snow chasing trips as "custom itineraries," for fear of what a group tour would look and feel like, I can honestly say I don't think I could have asked for a better first experience jumping into a set group tour. And if it is this region of Japan you are looking to explore - you won't want to do it without the expertise of Brent, Daniel, Cedric and the rest of the JST team. They made this trip unforgettable.

Incredible tour with Japan Ski Tours - Hokkaido Storm Chaser!

Ananda
04/03/2020
We had an absolutely wonderful time on the Hokkaido Storm Chaser tour. Though we were at the lower end of the skiing ability in the group (though hopefully still above the minimum threshold defined for the tour) we had an amazing time. All of the guides were professional, super helpful, and very fun to be around. The tour itself ran like clockwork and we never had to worry about any logistics throughout. The guides took us to spots on the mountain we never could have found on our own, so we had way more fun than we could have possibly done on our own at the same resorts and ski areas. The descriptions for lodging set low expectations (i.e. their descriptions indicate small rooms, etc.) but we found the lodging to be great at both hotel locations we stayed with rooms comparable in size to where we've stayed in European resorts. As promised, the guides also took us to very tasty restaurants for meals throughout the trip. I just got back and I already want to book this trip again!

Excellent, excellent trip can or recommend more highly! If you are looking for lift-accessible deep dry powder in Japan and are comfortable skiing country this is THE trip for you! It was a “low” year in Japan yet the Japan Ski Tour team made sure we were skiing in at least knee deep stuff every day and checked the forecast to see where the best snow would be each day. We skied everything from big resorts to active volcanos. Had a blast! Guides all very enjoyable, professional and spoke great English. Food choices were all true delicious Japanese cuisine and hotels were all 4 star. Also stopped at several Onsens which really added to the experience. When I come back to ski again in Japan will likely sign up for this tour again. If this kind of terrain is in your wheelhouse you will not regret going to Japan with this group.

We did not do the Frontier Explorer due to it being full. However, Japan Ski Tours arranged for a similar itinerary for my husband and me. Despite very disappointing ski conditions, we were very impressed with the professionalism with which Japan Ski Tours assisted us in making the most of our time in Hachimantai. They made every effort to find us the best skiing that was available and provided options for other things to do in lieu of skiing. We hope to return in the future and would absolutely use Japan Ski Tours again to plan the trip.

Amazing Family Trip

Our family of 4 (15 year old daughter and 13 year old son) had an amazing trip. We kept hearing that it was a light snow year in Japan which is amazing since we found fresh snow every day including one epic day at Asahidake where we all got face shots. Our guides were amazing; Andre, Andy and Ume in Furano and Ashley and Aimee in Otaru. The guides made great mountain choices and always found us the goods. The trip was well planned from the hotels, to the meals, to the Onsen trips. We highly recommend the trip and look forward to coming back

8 day Frontier explorer

Matt Beyer
25/02/2020
The experience was very good on almost every factor. There two suggestions I would have to make it perfect.
First, we had one of 8 in our group get injured and this person was one of two that were not quite at the skiing level as the rest. It would have been better primarily for this person to be grouped with a guide that skied at his ability. Overall I don't think it really impacted the runs we did, but it was beyond his ability.
Second, it was billed as an 8 day tour and the expectation was seven days of skiing. It was really not spelled out that there would be six days of skiing.
I would definitely due this tour again and suggest it to my friends and family. Main guide and other guides made it a great trip.

They say roll the dice, it's real

Sheri
09/02/2020
It's a low snow year in Japan, everybody knows it. So I'm mainly writing this review, so people know that when weather is bad, there's not much the guides can do. Majority of the trip turns into an Onsen tour.

It rained the day before I started the tour (or near-freezing-level snow, I don't remember which), and made everything below 1000m complete garbage snow. Depending on the resort choice, sometimes even above 1000m can be heavy and wet too. For example, on the day of the cat tour, only the first 200m is skiable off piste. For the rest of it, we take an icy groomer down (video linked). The last day at Hakkoda was amazing because the ropeway ran, and Hakkoda didn't get rained on like Iwate region.

The guides are super nice, and they try their best to make everybody happy. But when the weather doesn't cooperate, this is challenging. Two additional catch:
1) The resorts in the region are very small, so when the off piste isn't skiable, the guides just ask everybody to ski groomers. There aren't many groomed runs available, and there certainly isn't interesting moguls to practice on. So skiing becomes very boring.
2) The guides don't guide you into backcountry, unless it's the last two days at Hakkoda which is backcountry only. That means, if the guides bring you to a resort at a lower elevation, and you must hike up to find good snow, you're out of luck - go at your own risk.

I mainly say I don't recommend this tour, because I'm not willing to roll the dice anymore after this experience. But if you're willing to roll the dice, then I would certainly recommend this tour, because I'm sure they are amazing when snow isn't destroyed by rain (based on the past reviews anyway). Or, if your main purpose is Japanese culture, and skiing is secondary, then I also recommend the tour.

There were multiple other issues during the tour, which the group had discussed with Brent and the guides in person. Many people were frustrated. The purpose of this review isn't to point fingers; rather it's to inform people that bad weather can exist in Japan which can lead to negative experience, especially if your sole purpose is skiing.

This was my 3rd ski trip to Japan and arguably the best!

We signed on to the frontier explorer because the traditional Storm Chasers tour was full in Hakkaido.

I had never heard of this part of Japan and really did not even read the itinerary until we arrived.

There was no snow this year, but somehow Brent Nailed it!!! We hiked , we ‘onsen-ed’ , we skied, we ate, drank, and sang!!! We even met the famous Powderhounds

Every part of the trip was perfect and every day was a great new adventure.

A couple of points:

1) there is absolutely no down time!!! Most days you wake at 6 am, eat at 6.30, on the van chasing powder at 7.15 to 7.30, on the hill at 8.30, ski all day, onsen at 3.30, back at hotel at 6.15, and head to amazing dinners at 6.30, and fall into bed at 10!!! Awesome!!!!!!!

2) Brent’s disclaimers at the start of the booking process will frighten off most skiers so you will be guaranteed to hang out with great skiers who are awesome to hang out with!

3) the guides were awesome and are really flexible to what the group wants to do!!!

4) nobody speaks English, there are nobody on the hills, you may see 1 or 2 foreigners per day, bullet trains were awesome, food was exceptional, sumo wrestling is wild!

Thank you for everything and we are definitely coming back!!!!!!!

In search of POW in Northern Honshu

23/01/2020
A group of 8 skiers participated in a Frontier Explorer 8-day ski Trip run by Japan Ski Tours in January 2020. What a great experience! The guides found us great powder off-piste accessed from lift served ski resorts as well as in the true back country. The guides (Brent, David, Toru, ) were all expert skiers and were so much fun to ski with. They steered us clear of obstacles and always got us back to the Piste or base area safely. The terrain ranged from wide open bowls or slopes on the side of mountains to tree skiing in beautiful gladed areas accessible from lift-served resort with short hikes/boot packing. They always were patient with us no matter how deeply buried in snow we managed to get ourselves! Dinners were in beautiful Japanese-style restaurants that always included some fresh sashimi/sushi or various types of noodles as well as plenty of beer and sake. The hotels were clean and comfortable and convenient to the high-speed train stations. All in all, this was a fantastic experience and one that I would highly recommend to any avid skiers wanting a unique experience.

Japan Ski Tours, Frontier Explorer

23/01/2020
This trip provided an excellent mix of skiing, touring and general entertainment. Planning was flawless especially for a relatively snow-meager year, taking advantage of stashes of superb terrain which I certainly could not have found on my own. Admittedly I often focus too much on the sliding aspects of my ski travels. This tour exposed me to other realms such as foreign culture and culinary adventures which greatly enhanced the total experience. I was also fortunate to have a great crew of fun people joining me on this trip.
I would sign up for a repeat trip with JST with absolutely no hesitation.

Hakkoda skin or snowshoe up
I have never been to Japan before and have longed to ski the fabled japow with my wife. The week before the trip I started checking the Japan forecasts for Tohoku; none of which seemed very promising. We arrived in Morioka and Brent woefully explained that this was an unusually low snow year. He was practically apologizing to us. Yet, he and our other guides Eric and Taro managed to find ski lines with fresh tracks every day. The bluebird day at Hakkoda was nothing short of back country bliss, the kind of day that reminds us all why the "great outdoors" carries its name.
What makes this trip special though is the exposure to real Japanese culture that JST provides. The onsen experience can't be matched anywhere and the selected restaurants each offered truly memorable immersion into Japanese culture. The morning stops at the Lawson "convi" for coffee, beer and snacks and the ride up to the mountains with some new best mates all made for a great trip. Can't wait to book again.

Powder
Onsen with a floating sake ‘bar’
My best friend and I arrived in Japan to the least amount of snowfall Japan has experienced in 35 years!!
Amazingly JST was able to organize a week of fantastic skiing - including some epic powder and a magical day of backcountry in Hakkoda with their snow monsters... and several fantastic onsen experiences - including a pulse bath. Then in the evenings Brent showed us an unparalleled cultural experience which included live entertainment, dancing, great food, soba noodle eating contests. just to mention a few. The accommodations, transportation, logistics and guides were all first rate.
Job well done, JST.

From the moment we stepped out of the cat into knee deep pow on the very first run of the tour, to the final moment we called stumps at 6.30pm under lights at a hidden, empty, powder-filled, lift accessed resort, this was the trip to end all trips. Our guides, led by the formidable Doug-e-san, took us on an adventure through the cultural, culinary, and untracked back country we had been dreaming of.

If you can ski deep pow, love Japanese food, are keen to duck a couple of cheeky ropes here and there and have a question in mind, then the answer is yes. Jump on any free spot this tour has. And don't forget to request a last hurrah at the 'Hills night ski venue, especially when its dumping.

My second round and it did not disappoint thanks to our excellent guides Andre, Ume, Aimee and Andy. And a big thanks to the camera work of Ume, our great memories captured in pixels. Our tour ran like a well-oiled machine without any major hiccup. Despite the lack of freshy fallen snow, we were always lead to some almost untouched stashes. I will definitely be back. Though it would have been nice if our hotel in Otaru had an onsen.

We had so much fun 2 years ago on the Storm Chaser trip that we came back this year for the Frontier Explorer trip! Once again, we were blown away by the experience. Daniel and Brent were excellent guides, both on and off mountain. So much fun and hilarity exploring the small ski resorts and the quirky parts of Japanese culture. Can't recommend highly enough!

Home now from my first ski trip to Japan and am still grinning over the amazing conditions. Our group booked the Frontier Explorer tour. It should be called Powder Chaser because thanks to our incredible guides Daniel and Eric that's what we got to do for the week! And man, did we smash the powder thanks to their great knowledge of this region. To top off this unbelievable skiing, Daniel did a great job introducing us to the wonderful Japanese culture Apres Ski.

Did this trip in 2017 and loved it. Went to Alps in 2018 and wished we had just repeated with Japan Ski Tours. So we got smart and returned to Japan Ski Tours in Feb 2019.

Highly recommended to everyone who loves powder, tree skiing and Japanese food.

Just like on our 2017 trip, the guides were terrific and the other guests were cool.

Will do it again!

Recently went on the Frontier Explorer. Tour with 4 other friends. Had an amazing time - perfect group size and all were well matched in ability. Not one thing I could think of to improve things... skiing ✔️ accommodations ✔️ Choice of local eateries ✔️ Mode of transport ✔️ (Although a roof basket for skis would be welcome) guides ✔️✔️✔️ (Daniel and Eric were lots of fun)
Looking for an intro to “Japow”? Then this is the one for you! A word of caution however, the little beech trees that look flexible are NOT (hereafter known as the Japanese Cement Tree!!)
Take a few days before to see Tokyo, and take advantage of the amazing shipping to get gear sent from and tonthe airport - saves a LOT of grief!!

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Japan ski tours. they added so much value. I have never done a tour or ski tour so I was extremely skeptical but I was blown away. there is no way I would have been able to replicate the experience we had on the frontier explore trip on my own for the same cost. it was literally my best ski trip ever and I have been skiing my whole life, been around the world, skiing resorts, Cats and helicopters. I will be going back next year again without question!

Truly fantastic tour of the Tohoku region of Japan.
Excellent guides and very professional, always willing to help get those extra tasks done and completed to make the trip an awesome experience.
Accomodation was excellent, dinners were great and good fun every night, lunches were always very good on the hill.
Powder snow and terrain knowledge was excellent too.
Plenty of spares for equipment failures carried by the guides and in the van.
Great tree skiing and cat tour!
Over all a 5 star rated powder tour.
I'll be back for sure!
Thank you Brent Daniel and the team at ski Japan.

Just back from the Frontier Explorer trip with japanskitours and cannot begin to express how much fun we had!
We are a group of five experienced skiers from Canada (and a token American) who have traveled all over North America looking for powder trips. Our adventure for the legendary Japan "goods" did not disappoint!
Our main guide was Daniel, who was assisted by Eric for several days. These two gents were so much fun to ski with. Their intimate knowledge of the area helped immensely on a couple days with high winds and poor conditions. We did not have a day where we did not ski powder. I certainly will not forget the "chest deep" runs we managed to sneak in!
They are not kidding around when they advertise an authentic cultural experience! We really enjoyed the entertainment, food and activities off hill. It was great being away from the "westernized" ski areas. The benefit was that powder runs -not stashes -last for days!
Would recommend without hestitation!!

Awesome trip with Japan Ski Tours this January. I was dreaming about skiing Japan for years and it lives up to the hype thanks to our guides! I skied the deepest snow ive ever skied, and found fresh snow everyday even if it didnt snow the night before. It would have been a lot less pow and a lot more attempting to maneuver the mountains with out them. Thanks a tonne!!! Super appreciate the dream trip!

Trip was amazing. So much powder. Brent and his crew were awesome. Our group had a wide range of skill level and they accommodated everyone including the 2 guys that were looking for big drops. Powder was deep and they knew spots that were untracked. This trip wasn't just a ski trip it was also a cultural experience as they took us to different Japanese cuisine. Trip was well organized and the only thing you had to worry about is your next turn. I would highly recommend.

We were treated to an exceptional cultural and physical opportunity to see some of the most amazing people and places during our Frontier Epress exexpedition in early January 2019. We were transported, fed, guided, and entertained throughout the entire week. The skiing was challenging and the choices for restaurants and entertainment were spot on. Doug and Brent Potter along with guide Eric Greene treated us like royalty. The description of the tour was accurate. The trees were tight so I would say this tour is for an advanced skier with good lungs.

The snow in Japan is legendary, deepest days of my life while on this trip! The guides were experts and took us to a different resort each day timing it right with the best snowfall and smallest crowds. They also took us out to great traditional Japanese dinners and local bars for drinks for those who wanted. An unforgettable powder and cultural experience.

Fantastic Father-Son Ski Trip

Jon Chorley
02/03/2018
Epic snow, great guides and good company. I was nervous that late February (when my son Jack had school vacation) might be post peak but I was wrong. It snowed every day and the guides worked the locations we skied and the runs that we took to maximize our experience. Each day was fantastic in its own way with different resorts, runs and great snow. But the most amazing thing was that probably the best run was the last run of the entire trip - at 3:00pm - a huge tree filled bowl of waist deep totally untracked powder. Imagine a group of skiers, each able to have their own personal line, hollering and whooping with joy as they swooped down through the trees and the slope. Only in Japan. This is how memories are made. Thank you Luke, Aimee, Eric, Brent and Daniel. And thank you Jack.

Excellent trip. Snow, as ever, was excellent although not quite so deep as other years. Temperature was a little chilly to, albeit quite bearable. Guide, Aimee, was friendly, competent and knew the terrain. Food was excellent although a little too much red meat for me.

Wonderful light and deep snow but take note: these mountains are not steep compared w US or Cañada. Most have a few hundred feet of tight trees followed by long shallow runouts. Accommodations were quite nice and food was pretty good. Guides seemed competent and patient. I’ve never been in snow as deep and light as this so it was a real treat!

This was a bucket list trip but now I have to come back next year! if the body holds up. The snow was Epic as expected. Our guides were professional and our Driver Shin went out of his way to drive me around looking for goggles one night.
The accomodations were excellent. especially in Niseko. the unit had 3 rooms! good breakfast! in Asahikawa the room was smaller but the breakfast was excellent. both had good Onsen as well
Highly recommended trip

My friend and I did the seven day storm chaser and it was by far the best snowboard trip ever. We had powder every day, sometimes up to your waist the guides were excellent. We had Aimee for 3 days and Pat for 2 and they were awesome. They showed us fresh tracks on almost every run in the woods and had secret stashes. You definitely need to be advanced as you’re in the woods a lot. Our tour driver and guide for dinners for traditional Japanese dinners and culture was Tats - again he was awesome. We ate great Japanese cuisine, took us to Sake factories, local bars that very few westerners go to and to a Tyco drum bar where we taught all the customers how to do sake bombs. The other guys on the trip were great (which we were lucky). The onsets (natural spring hot tubs) were awesome. Japan Ski Tours were professionals and have everything organized and if their was a hiccup, they would fix it immediately. Would highly recommend them and can’t wait to book my next trip with them.

The most amazing trip, everything you hear about JAPOW is not true...it's BETTER!! JST organized a killer itinerary, our guides Aimee and Kevin were fantastic, and Shin our driver and insider was the man. Couldn't have been more fun. Bottomless powder at Mt Asahidake, like nothing I've skied before. I could go on and on...we're coming back!

Great Mix of Snow and Culture

29/03/2017
My wife and I joined the Feb 12, 2017 Frontier Explorer trip with Brent. We had a blast both skiing off-the-beaten-path hills in northern Japan, and learning about the unique culture and cuisine of Japan. Brent was a total trooper dealing with our question-a-minute pace as we soaked in as much Japan as we could.

The skiing was pretty cool. I'd heard about the crowds in Hokkaido, and didn't want to deal with that. The hills we went to were locals only, never any lines, and the snow was untracked even 3-5 days after the last storm. We poached lift lines, tree shots, and side country, and always stayed incognito from ski patrol.

Brent knew all the great places to eat and soak. As a native English speaker, nothing was lost in translation. The van was clean and capable. When our plan fell apart due to weather/conditions, Brent always had a back-up plan for us.

Super fun trip. We're happy to went and made some good friends and stories along the way.

Going to Japan to ski is just like going anywhere else - The people who are in-the-know get the goods while the rest fight over the scraps. This isn't just true for the pow it goes for the food, lodging, nightlife, and cultural experiences.

Having the Japan Ski Tours crew (Brent was our guide) on board blew every door wide open and pretty much made the trip what it was - AMAZING! Endless fresh lines (even days after a big storm), incredible food and lodging, and insight into Japanese culture and daily life that would be impossible to gain anywhere else.

This country has so much to offer, Japan Ski Tours made sure we got the most out of our trip. 10/10 good times!

Everything about the tour was excellent, accommodations, transport, food, skiing and especially Daniel, our ski guide. His enthusiasm was contagious especially when he found the hidden stashes of powder for us. Even better with the chest deep powder on the last day at Asahidake with fresh snow falling all day. Wasn't expecting much powder since it was near the end of ski season. Definitely come back. Will certainly recommend this trip to all my powder hound friends. Big thanks on a well run tour.

After 10 years of Hokkaido trips decided to do this guided tour with japan ski tours to find some new pow, get away from the crowds and get some culture, food and onsen. Knowledgable guide and all round good guy Brent Potter aka Brett Powder, delivered the goods with an epic tour and some of the best boarding I've had in 10 years. I have done 3 tours with Japan Ski Tours and will use them next time I go to for some more JAPOW. The Frontier Explorer tour was everything as advertised. What I really enjoy is lots of snow with no line ups. Brent has also done the recon for you so you just show up and follow him to the sweet POW spots. I highly recommend this tour as takes you off the beaten path to some awesome locations.

Our "guide" Brent with Japan Ski Tours was so much more than a guide; I believe words like "travel agent, advisor, translator, chauffeur, consigliere, food-orderer, drinking buddy, photographer and rent-a-bro" (among others) should all be included in the services Brent provided.

We had a group of 6 friends coming together for the trip and Brent did a great job of giving us space at times but fitting right in to conversation flawlessly and adding immensely to our experiences. He dealt with everyone's occasional tardiness or equipment failures without issue and kept us all moving towards powder time and time again.

Can't recommend JST or Brent enough... would go back in a heartbeat!

THANKS!!

Tour 2-9th Feb 2017. We are a group of 6 (1 skier, 5 boarders) that have been heading to Japan for the past 9 seasons. This was our first time outside of Hokkaido & also our first 'guided' tour. We've toured around a fair bit on our own and hired guides for a day or so here and there but not a fully guided tour format.
Let me say right from the start our guide Brett Pow (aka Brent Potter)was excellent.
We've all been thirsting for this kind of trip - new destinations, fresh tracks, virtually no other western tourists and really good local experiences with someone who can translate.(as anyone who has been to Japan will know - it can be a very confusing place with not much English). Aside from the obvious benefits of a guide on the mountain, having someone who will not only answer your endless stream of stupid questions & translate a menu is priceless...
Just don't forget to bring your modesty towel for the onsens.

The trip exceeded our expectations. In addition to visiting one of the most civilized countries in the world, the guides, the logistics, the accomodations, the food and above all the skiing were absolutely spectacular. Daniel, Luke, Pat, each made every moment of our trip a quality experience. Their attention to detail from zeroing in on awesome ski lines in a whiteout to making reservations at back street boutique restaurants were just a couple of the highlights that stood out

I can't say enough about my experience with Brent and Luke. They run a killer operation. All the pre-trip prep was easy and clear thanks to Luke. There were no surprises and everything was very reasonably priced. Then once we arrived, Brent took over guide duties and boy did he deliver. Having a private van for a our group of 8 was perfect. Nice hotels, great meals, epic snow. Brent showed us everything and we didn't have to worry about anything. I can't recommend this highly enough.

What a week. While at first we were a little distraught when the white out conditions on Monday and early Tuesday shut down the lifts at Niseko, essentially stranding us at our hotel, the week quickly turned around and showed us some amazing riding. Our guide, Brent "Powder" Potter, took the bull by the horns on the second day of the blizzard and helped us get creative and find a way to get some riding in.
When we did finally start hitting the lifts, groomers, and back country, he was very helpful in getting us down the best runs and into the deepest, freshest, and tastiest pow.
After we hung up the boards, skis, and boots for the evenings, Brent was a master at entertaining 8 adventurous and hungry dudes, taking us to small, authentic, and unique restaurants and bars. Needless to say, we never got bored, and never got tired of more powder and the breathtaking Japanese scenery.

I will be back!

We did the 8 day and we couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Brent is a total pro and works his ass off to make the entire trip flow seamlessly.

We got held off the mountain on day 1, but Brent worked with us to literally drive the van to some residential areas that we could board down with fresh pow.

Every restaurant he took us to was unique and awesome.

The van comfortably fit us, so you could sleep in between resorts.

The hotels were all incredible and had an onsen in them so you could sauna every night when you got home.

We've been doing an international trip for four years and this was by far our favorite trip so far.

If you want some JAPOW - this is your trip.

4 of us from the US signed up for this tour and were paired with 2 Aussies. The 6 of us had the time of our lives! First off, the skiing was everything we hoped it would be. Deep and dry powder that was falling daily. And the locals tell us it wasn't even a particularly great year for snow!

Daniel was our guide (2nd year with Japan Ski Adventures) and he was the best. He knew where to find all the best stashes while also trying to give us some variety of terrain. Japan skiing is a little different. It seems that there are more trams than chair lifts (keeps you warm but also means kicking off your skis and then putting them back on). You don't rack up as much vertical either as you seem to get 500-1000' of great vertical followed by a lot of flat sections towards the bottom. That said, when you are hitting knee to waist deep powder in the trees it's hard to complain!

Daniel was also fantastic about accomodating the group. He would often hit little convenience store or grocery store stops so we could pick up extra food or supplies (helpful if you have picky eaters in the group). He had a nice itinerary of places to go for dinner that gives the team a nice cultural experience.

The rooms were nice. I preferred the place in Niesko just because it had more private bedrooms and a shared common area whereas the room in Asahidake was a little more cramped for two. But all in all the rooms/hotels were nice and you'll be very happy with the customer service throughout Japan.

I highly recommend this tour and this touring company to get a complete Japanese skiing experience (great powder, lots of terrain variety at different resorts, many dining experiences and a chance to bond with like minded ski enthusiasts). A perfect trip.

We had a great time on the 'Storm Chaser' with Japan Ski Adventures, getting into lots of new and deep snow off piste at a variety of Hokkaido ski areas. We had lots of fresh pow, and even some sunshine exposing the beautiful views and landscapes, and guided access to lots of great lines that even the locals aren't using up! Good company and great food, out of the way places, and insider intel all made this a great trip and great value. Thanks guys, we will be back for more!

JSA provided one of the best experiences I have ever had traveling. I could not be more impressed with how professional and fun these guys are. From chasing down storms to hitting up the best dinners on the island, everything was top notch.
We made it to a different resort every day so that we could ride the unlimited JaPow. Our guide, Brent Powder, knew every little place to find stashes of untouched on the days that we didn't receive 20+ cms. On the fresh days there was no need to ride off piste.
On the one dry day we had, he even provided us a back up plan, heading to the Avy barriers where we hit pillow line after pillow line.
The snow was the best I have ever ridden but the nights were just as fun.
Thank you JSA for the epic time.

A great introduction to some legendary Japowder!

Karl
20/09/2015
When planning my trip to Japan, I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of trip packages one could choose from. Sure, one could make the argument that you can’t necessarily go wrong when making this decision. When I would tell friends of this internal quarrel they would just be give me a look of annoyance. But still, when planning such a legendary trip as this, you want to ensure that it is just that, legendary. Any trip Powderhounds advertises is likely to be just that, yet there are still details that set each tour apart from one another.

For me, it was important that I saw a variety of locations while in Japan. Not only would this allow me to see different resorts, but it also provided flexibility for the ever-changing weather conditions. The Niseko Resort definitely lives up to the hype, and you could no doubt spend your entire time there, but being able to venture out to more unknown resorts was more than worth it. Jumping in a van and driving up to Asahikawa to ski resorts like Asahidake made this trip more than just a ski trip, it allowed you to see aspects of the country and the culture that you would otherwise miss if you only stuck to Niseko.

The diversity within the trip, paired with two great hosts/guides in Brent and Luke, made for a trip that will be hard to match when I (hopefully) return to the land of Japan in the near future!

This was a great tour and as the name implies we would ‘chase’ the resort in the area which was going to give us the best skiing conditions and experience for the day, taking into account a number of factors such as the days forecast, previous snowfall, wind, off piste avalanche risk etc. Head guide Brent was very knowledgeable of the area and resorts and despite Hokkaido having a comparatively bad season of snowfall this year, each day on the tour was fantastic and we were able to find great little powder stashes, tree runs and generally find the best spots on the mountain to ski/ride. This was my second trip to Hokkaido, but on this tour I was able to ride great little mountains/resorts which I’d never heard of before. Having a guide to show you the best spots on the mountain was also invaluable.

To finish off a great day we would find ourselves soaking in an onsen; and then would head out to a different restaurant each night, serving a different type of Japanese cuisine. All the restaurant choices were excellent (and budget friendly).
Having grown up and lived in Japan basically all his life, tour owner/guide Luke was a great source of knowledge and insight to the Japanese culture and way of life. Also, being a small group of only 6 plus Luke and Brent meant we were able to quickly get to know each other, have some great fun and conversations, and learn a lot about japan and it’s culture.
I would recommend this tour for great skiing/riding and Japanese cultural experience.

The snow quality and wide range of resorts (large and small) in Hokkaido make the island a great location for skiing. But Luke and Brent made the trip so much more. Their inside knowledge of the region and resorts made it possible to maximize the experience.

Each night, they'd look at the next day's forecast and select the resort with the greatest potential. From first tracks through the side country gates on a blue bird day. To wind-protected trees on a blustery day. Then we'd follow up the awesome skiing with an immersion in Japanese culture starting with a soak in an onsen. In Niseko, the soak was at our top-notch resort. In Asahidake, it was in a small onsen tucked up a narrow mountain road. Then, finally, we'd eat at a restaurant featuring a different type of Japanese cuisine every night.

While Niseko was more touristy, the emphasis of the trip was off-the-beaten path. That meant we sampled some small ski resorts with little to no Westerners. And often had the restaurant to ourselves. In short, I'm not much to join tour groups. But this trip was enough to make me reconsider.
