Getting to the Remarkables

Southern Lakes Heli Skiing

Where is The Remarkables Ski Field?

The Remarkables ski field is within The Remarkables mountain range which is on the southeastern shores of Lake Wakatipu and 24km southeast of Queenstown New Zealand. The Remarkables ski field is tucked in behind Double Cone.

Driving to The Remarkables

It is a 35-45 minute drive from Queenstown to The Remarkables ski resort. Chains definitely need to be carried and at the turn off to the ski field on Kingston Rd (State Highway 6), there is an electronic sign that indicates the road status, whether the chain fitting service is in operation, and which car parks are full.

The first 10km of the windy access road is now sealed (yay!) and the remaining 3km is unsealed and has the potential to be corrugated, steep, dusty, muddy and/or icy. At least there are now lots of safety rails so it’s not quite as treacherous as it used to be! Take care on the way down as the marvellous views can be a little distracting.

There are various car parks at The Remarkables – all are free. Many years ago we visited and the car park was a complete bog hole. You needed waders! Since then they haven’t sealed the car parks but thankfully it seems they’ve added some stones and drainage so it’s not as muddy.
