Lake Ohau Lodge
Staying at the
Lake Ohau Lodge is a quintessential part of any Ohau ski experience. It has the room quality, gourmet food, service and hospitality you’d expect of a hotel, yet it has the friendly skiwi social atmosphere and traditional feel of a ski lodge. More information on the
Ohau Lodge can be found here.
The lodge is located on the shores of the gorgeous Lake Ohau, at the bottom of the access road to the Ohau ski field, which is 9.6km (15 mins) up the mountain.
Other Ohau Accommodation Options
Lake Ohau Alpine Village is just a little way down the road from the Lake Ohau Lodge (towards the highway). The village doesn’t have any shops or the like. It consists of various houses, a few of which are available to rent, and the Lake Ohau Homestay B&B.
Twizel Accommodation
It’s also possible to stay in the town of Twizel, which is the largest town in the Mackenzie region. On fine days, the views of the Alps looming above the town are pretty impressive. The town has a decent range of restaurants and watering holes, as well as shops, and a huge advantage of staying in Twizel is that the accommodation is mostly very inexpensive. Twizel accommodation options include motels, backpackers and lots of holiday houses.
Twizel Accommodation Listings
From Twizel it’s 13km to the turn off to Ohau from the main highway. The Lake Ohau Lodge is 22km (15 mins) from the turn-off on a sealed road, and then the actual ski area is a further 9.6km (15 mins) up the mountain on gravel road.
Lake Tekapo & Mt Cook
Other options for accommodation if you’re also wanting to sample other nearby ski areas are
Lake Tekapo hotels or the
Mt Cook village. The Mt Cook village is 109km from the ski field whilst Lake Tekapo is 101km away. These options are probably OK to do a day trip to Ohau ski field, but considering the commutes required they wouldn’t be ideal for a multi-day Ohau ski holiday.
