Terrain, Snow & Timing

Gudauri & the wider region offers an array of backcountry terrain that caters to skiers and snowboarders of various skill levels. Here’s a breakdown of the terrain you can explore.

  • The mountains around Gudauri are renowned for its vast alpine bowls, providing open and expansive areas for backcountry enthusiasts. These bowls offer opportunities for both powder-filled descents and wide-open turns.
  • Thrill-seekers will appreciate the steep chutes and couloirs that terrain near Gudauri has to offer. These challenging descents are ideal for advanced skiers and snowboarders looking for an adrenaline rush.
  • If you’re looking for solitude and untouched snow, venture into the region's remote zones. These areas require careful planning and are best explored with a knowledgeable guide.
  • Gudauri experiences snowfall from December until May although most snowfall is concentrated in the spring months. March is best for deep powder beneath the ski lifts and early April is great for long ski tours on stable snow. Due to its high elevation and unique climate patters, while the spring season is winding down in the Alps, Gudauri is just reaching its peak. Due to the 1,300m elevation difference in the ski resort and even greater elevations in the backcountry, you’re likely to find all conditions from light, dry powder on top to spring corn on the bottom.

    Itinerary

The tour starts and finishes in Tbilisi, either at your hotel or a pick-up directly from the airport. Once at the hotel in Gudauri, your tour hosts will ensure you are armed with all the information & logistic support that you require. On the final day you will be driven back to Tbilisi for an airport drop off, or somewhere else to then continue your Georgian adventure.

The full program of exploring Gudauri's best backcountry terrain starts at 0930hr each morning with a pick up from your accommodation and ends about 8 hours later with a drop off at 1730hr. Your guide will customise each day's tour based on where the conditions are best and depending on the group's ability & wishes!

To read the full package program, see the Itinerary tab.

    Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation, plus all breakfasts are included in the package price. You will stay in a standard room (or upgrade to a deluxe room) at the ski-in Marco Polo Hotel at the base of the lifts in Gudauri. For lunches during the tour, ask the hosts where the best hang-outs are. Affordable, interesting food will not be far away. Dinner will be a feast wherever you go, but we suggest trying out your hotel's restaurant before heading out anywhere else. For adventurous & fit ski-tourers, an option to stay 2 or 3 nights in the remote 'Altihut' on Kazbegi will be a great variation of this tour package. Nights at the Altihut include breakfast & dinner.

For more detailed information on food & accommodation, see the Lodging tab.

Guides, Avalanche & Mountain Safety and Skills Development

Explore with deeply knowledgeable guides. The tour's experienced guides are not only fluent in English but also intimately familiar with the Gudauri/Kazbegi region. They possess an in-depth knowledge of the terrain, ensuring a safe and exhilarating adventure into Gudauri’s expansive backcountry. With countless options to explore, you’re guaranteed to have a blast while soaking in breathtaking mountain vistas. All guides on the tour are full time professionals with the highest qualifications as ski instructors & off-piste guides. All are fluent in English but there are also multilingual options including Georgian, German, Czech & French. Maximum guide to guest ratio is 1:4, so if your group is larger than 4 people you will 2 guides!

Avalanche & Mountain Safety. In the realm of freeriding, there’s no such thing as too much knowledge and safety awareness, especially concerning avalanches. Whether you’re using a beacon for the first time or a seasoned snow profile analyst, your guides will elevate your understanding and awareness, placing safety first when backcountry ski touring and freeriding in Gudauri.

Beyond avalanche safety, the guides are skilled in helping you navigate challenging, deep, and steep terrain with ease, using specialized riding techniques. Conserve your energy, stay out longer, and carve through more powder. Elevate your skills and make the most of your backcountry ski tour in Gudauri.

Ski Ability & Customising Your Package

This package is suitable for solos and groups of any ski or snowboard ability and can be fully customised to meet your wants/needs/dates etc. The standard package only includes accommodation, transfers & lift passes, but there is an option to include ski or snowboard lessons & off-piste guiding (with the operators own English-speaking instructors/guides), or gear rental (at additional cost).

    Getting to Tbilisi

We recommend getting to Georgia via Tbilisi airport. Travel to Tbilisi (TBS) is simple via most of Europe's main airports or the Middle East. Skiers & snowboarders from other continents are probably best to come via Dubai, London, Munich, Paris, or Istanbul. You can be met & picked up directly from the airport or from a Tbilisi hotel. At the end of the holiday, you will be driven back to the airport for departure or somewhere else in Tbilisi - whatever you wish. Travel time between Tbilisi & Gudauri is around 2½hr.

For accommodation before or after the tour, see our Tbilisi Accommodation page.
