Cat Skiing in Bakhmaro & Adjara Georgia

A well-established cat ski operation in the Lesser Caucasus mountains at 3 locations in Bakhmaro & Adjara in southwest Georgia, Powderproject.ch delivers an exceptional powder skiing experience for more adventurous skiers & snowboarders. All inclusive from the moment you land at the Kutaisi or Batumi airport in Georgia, cat-skiing at Bakhmaro & Adjara is now rated amongst the world's finest. Exceptional snow, unbelievable food, expert guiding & safety are the hallmarks of a week-long tour at each operation. If relatively new to cat skiing, head to Bakhmaro for a classic catski week first. More adventurous and advanced riders might prefer the alpine Wolfsbed Hut at 2,400m. Or for expert riders & explorers with a preference for seeking new terrain, Project X is the place to be.

All 3 catskiing operations are located in the snowiest part of the Caucasus in southwest Georgia, close to Black Sea. Each has terrain ranging from 1,700 to 2750m altitude, and incudes perfect tree-skiing, alpine meadows & bowls, plus steep couloirs & diverse natural features. For detail on where the Bakhmaro & Adjara cat ski operations are located, and info on how best to get there, see the Location tab.

6 Reasons to Ride with Powderproject

  1. Reliability - high levels of snowfall, especially at the beginning of the season.
  2. Professionalism - Swiss / German organization, quality and safety management, back-up Snowcat.
  3. Experience - new freeride locations in remote locations in the Caucasus.
  4. Ease - no visa required, good flight connections with direct flights from London, Milano, Barcelona and other cities.
  5. Adventure - back to the roots in the middle of nowhere, first lines guaranteed.
  6. Possibilities - the perfect locations for the best photo & video shots, whether with action cam or drone.

Bakhmaro

Having run its first season in 2016/17, it quickly came to terms with the massive volume of snow & superb terrain, establishing a multitude of fantastic routes with up to 800m skiable vertical from a top elevation of 2,755m. Most runs are below the high summits though, having between 300 to 500m vertical per run. The terrain includes tree skiing of a Japanese quality! Depending on the group, around 10 runs are completed per day (3,000 to 5,000m vertical/day).

The once rustic lodgings utilised when the operation started at Bakhmaro are now a thing of the past. Newly built hotel-style accommodations with super-comfortable twin & triple rooms (plus a few doubles), each with ensuite bathrooms and balconies are now available in 'The Pioneers' & 'Riders Lodge'. A large dining/lounge area plus a sauna makes for a positively palatial setting compared to the original lodgings. A more basic guesthouse accommodation option exists for private groups at a reduced tariff, but we can attest to their comfort and added authenticity. Despite its remote location, the sensational local food & drink has only gotten better over time and forms a major part of the whole experience.

Multiple snowcats run at Bakhmaro and places can fill very quickly during peak periods. See more information & booking for Bakhmaro Cat Skiing weeks here. There are usually dates for Women Only cat-ski tours, providing exclusive use of a snowcat to all female ski groups. Exclusive use of the sauna is also arranged. See more information & booking for Women's Week Catskiing here. In mid-March the focus in Bakhmaro is snowcat assisted ski touring & splitboarding. Two tour dates are offered in both December and March. See more information and booking for Bakhmaro Cat Ski & Tour Weeks here.

Adjara

From season 2019/20 a more remote cat ski operation was established in Adjara. Access is via Bakhmaro & guests are limited to 12. Accommodation is in a 'ski-out', rustic (but gorgeous) alpine hut called Wolfsbed, located at 2,400m elevation. The hut has been improved markedly over successive seasons, and is now perhaps beyond 'rustic' and into the realms of cosy & comfortable. Expert skiers & snowboarders with previous backcountry experience should check out Wolfsbed Hut Catskiing Weeks here.

In mid-March the focus at Wolfsbed Hut is snowcat assisted ski touring & splitboarding. Two tour dates are offered in March. See more information and booking for Wolfsbed Hut Catski & Tour Weeks here.

Project X

A new project fully established in season 22/23 is Project X. It has lived up to its promises of epic new terrain, never skied by humans, and a comfortable mountain lodge in a remote part of southwest Georgia. Come along and name your own run! See more info & availability for Project X.

Where is Cat Skiing in Bakhmaro & Adjara Located?

Cat Skiing in Bakhmaro & Adjara is located in the Lesser Caucasus mountains of south-west Georgia. Georgia is on the eastern shore of the Black Sea and is bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south. The Caucasus have some of the highest snowfalls in Europe. Bakhmaro is at 2,050m elevation only 90km by road south of the Kutaisi (KUT) airport, which in turn is about 24km from Georgia's second largest city, Kutaisi. The Adjara mountain hut is located 45minutes (by snowcat) further into the alpine zone from Bakhmaro at an elevation of 2,400m. Despite its relatively close proximity to Kutaisi, the journey to Bakhmaro in winter takes over 3½ to 4hr. Project X is further south and is accessed via the road to Goderdzi ski resort from Batumi. It is around 80km east of Batumi (BUS) airport, and takes approximately 3hr to reach in good conditions by car and then snowcat.

The beauty of a cat ski trip here is that all you have to do is get to the correct airport in Georgia. From there you are picked up and everything is handled for you.

Airports & Transfers

There are three gateway airports for cat skiing at Bakhmaro, Wolfsbed Hut & Project X. Kutaisi, Batumi & at a stretch, Tbilisi.

For all locations, Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) (a.k.a. the grandiose named 'David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport') is a good option, but for Project X, Batumi is better. Bakhmaro is a 2hr drive & 1½hr snowcat journey away in winter. Wolfsbed Hut is a further hour by snowcat. Project X is further still, but by a different road to the south. The best flights to Kutaisi that are most convenient for the Saturday to Saturday itinerary are from Abu Dhabi (AUH), Milan Malpensa (MXP), Paris (BVA), Berlin (BER), Memmingen - Munich West (FMM), Rome (FCA), Brussels (CRL), Dortmund (DTM) & Warsaw (WAW). Flights from other origins like Barcelona, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Prague & Vienna will require extensive overnight accommodation wither side of the tour. Flights origins to Kutaisi are forever changing so it is best to check very carefully when working out how to get there. For many guests from non-European locations, Abu Dhabi (AUH) & Milan Malpensa (MXP) are probably the best airport options.

Batumi (BUS) airport is convenient to both Bakhmaro (+ Wolfsbed Hut) and more so Project X. Flights to Batumi are mostly via Istanbul (IST), and will often require an overnight stay in Turkey. flights to Batumi do suffer from cancellation, particularly during winter storms. It does suck getting stuck in Turkey when a massive snowstorm is raging in Georgia!

Tbilisi Airport (TBS) is over 200km further to the east, but is serviced by more flights from a wider range of origins. Whilst the included transfers for Bakhmaro & Wolfsbed Hut are only for guests landing at Kutaisi or Batumi, transfers from Tbilisi to Bakhmaro can be arranged by the tour operator. They cost over €200 one way, with the payment required in cash to the driver. Having done the trip in one direction ourselves, we do not recommend using Tbilisi airport as a gateway for these cat ski tours, unless one intends to head to the backcountry of Gudauri or explore the fascinating city of Tbilisi before or after cat skiing. Transfers from Tbilisi can take over 8hr by road, depending on the driver and the road conditions. This time may improve once the multi-lane highway connecting Tbilisi to Kutaisi is completed. As to when that happens is anyone's guess ...... this is Georgia afterall!

To search for a flight Kutaisi, Batumi or Tbilisi, use our recommended flight search engines.

One of the best ski experiences I’ve ever had!

29/01/2024
One of the best ski experiences I’ve ever had - hats off to Ingo and his team! Just about everything was well executed and skiing itself was just out of this world. There’s just too much to include in a brief review so here are a couple of highlights:

- We were hitting a solid 8+ runs a day and averaging between 4500-5000m vertical
- The terrain was super varied, from poplar forest runs to open alpine slopes, and we went to a new location every day
- Even with 4-5 groups out there, we hardly crossed anyone’s tracks, scoring several epic first tracks during the week.
- Not that this was entirely planned but, the groups and mix of skiers/boarders was great with everyone at a similar ability level and no laggers. Also, just a fantastic group of people #internationalcat
- Every meal was outrageously good, with at least 8 homemade dishes and a different variation of kachapuri every night. Be ready for some cheese!
- Our guide, Giorgi, got some fantastic footage of us including some seriously good-looking drone shots which I’ll definitely be sharing with everyone I know! Props to Giorgi, the other guides, and our Cat driver- real stand-up folks who found fresh spots for us every day!

So there we go! I’m *almost* tempted not to post this review since I’d like the experience not to change one bit, but Ingo and all the people at Powerproject deserve the recognition. Thanks for everything!

Is All Its Cracked Up To Be!

25/09/2023

Sometimes trips to incredibly snowy locations don’t quite as planned, and our time in Bakhmaro during a few days in February 2023 with Ingo & his superb crew went a little like that. But regardless, what we saw at Bakhmaro is everything we expected and more. Huge volumes of snow (more on that later), gorgeous terrain including incredible tree skiing, the most wonderful food, and professional guiding, snowcat driving and service.

Staying in the 'Base' guesthouse accommodation was fun, with exceptional food & hospitality shown to all the guests. Putting your soiled toilet paper into a bin (to avoid plumbing blockages) and some water interruption issues let it down slightly, but such is life in the backcountry deep in winter. The alternative accommodation, the Pioneers Lodge, looks like a magnificent oasis in winter, and is the pick for anyone wanting a 4-star hotel experience.

Whilst at Bakhmaro (for only 4 nights in the end ...... long story!), the incredible weather dropped over a metre of snow each night for 3 nights in a row, producing bottomless snow conditions and high avalanche danger during our very short stay, so skiing was limited for us to low angle, but perfectly spaced trees. The guides were highly motivated and cognisant of the groups safety. All we heard about on our arrival was how amazing the day's skiing had been, just before the worst of the storm arrived that night. Oh well, it’s not often we miss the best of it, and clearly the entire group (from all over the world too) was well satisfied with the outcome.

For a group of Powderhounds, it is no surprise that we adored the local dogs. They are such characters and add another beautiful dimension to an already magical experience. They love going on ski-tours out from the village too and will follow as best they can.

Having the kitchen crew do some traditional dance with us after some shots of cha-cha (local strong spirit) around the fireplace was another great experience.

We spent too short a time at Bakhmaro during that most hectic of snowstorms. Conditions cleared only briefly during our time there, but of course it was clearing the day we needed to leave! But what our time showed us was that despite all the challenges of operating in Georgia, in a remote, high snowfall zone, Ingo and team of drivers, guides, & hospitality workers are a super professional organisation that can provide whatever 'goods' you are seeking.

Bring your fattest skis and get here this season, otherwise you'll only be a year older when you do!

Powderproject Bakhmaro Cat Skiing

31/01/2022
In few words...one of the best powder trips ever.
The overall organisation of powderproject team and their soul - Ingo is amazing!
We had an amazing week of skiing Japanese like snow and terrain of your dreams here....the feeling is as you would get yourself into "all you can eat" powder restaurant with Michelin quality dishes. We skied our guts out each day from dawn till dusk on uncrowded remote Bakhmaro terrains that are accessible only to guests of Ingo and his team. The vision that they have is something am sure will develop this location much further and to an exclusive level not matched in many places on the globe.
The Pioneers lodge offers amazing housing experience, the food there is amazing and the team heartily breaths with the place. We'll come back for more with 100% certainty!

Back again! Second Trip with Ingo and his team in Georgia. After great experience in Bakhmaro last year, we took the chance to do the first week in the new base in Adjara. And once again - we are stocked about his project.

At our arraving we were warmly welcomed by the team and it felt like we had never left Georgia. First night we stayed in Bakhmaro, where we got introduced to the secrets of backgammon. The next day we went to Adjara by Snowcat. The hut on the top of the alpine village is really cosy with great view around the whole area. Surrounded by a great team you can enjoy the whole week with tasty high quality georgian food. Also this year we celebrated New Years Eve in Georgia - an unique experience with fantastic georgian food, chacha, dancing and celebrating the begining of 2020.

We were the first guests at new lodge - so we explored new terrain and we had a lot of First first lines - now more words needed ;) Adjara offers you a wide alpine area with a lot of opportunities to ski.

During the whole trip you can see that Ingo has put his heart and soul into this project and is passionate about it. And that's exactly what makes Powderproject.ch so unique.

We can highly reccomend a trip to Adjara for everyone wanting an authentic experience in an amazing country and location surrounded by an amazing Team! Thanks to powderproject.ch for this incredable week!!

Amazing Adjara

28/01/2020
What a place, what an experience... our group of 9 skiers has just returned from a perfect week in Adjara. We flew from a mix of locations, meeting up in Kutaisi and then on to Bakhmaro where we met the magnificent Ingo and his team of Cat drivers.

It's an amazing setup- excellent terrain, with limitless options. Our first few bluebird days were a bit stressful as Ingo scouted for snow after several days of strong winds- we found it, but were lusting after his legendary Bakhmaro powder. For the second half of the week, we were buried in the stuff and played in the trees around this colossal area. Our final day was one for the memory banks- skiing steep forest in more than a metre of fresh, light, fluffy powder. I can't stop thinking about it...

And the rest of it? Well, don't believe Ingo when he tells you the accomodation is basic:. He and his team have worked miracles in transforming an old shepherd's hut and it feels warm, comfortable and pristine. The place is toasty with wood-burners strategically placed and plenty of room to hang and dry ski kit; plenty of hot running water (although the pressure is a little dribbly...I have to find some sort of negative!) and the sauna will apparently be ready in the next week or so.

The food is superb and classically Georgian- lots of kachapuri (bread stuffed with cheese), soups and great vegetable plates. You will absolutely not go hungry.

Ingo is awesome- he seems unflustered by anything and it is genuinely heroic what he has built and manages. He is an open book, talking clearly about his terrain choices and sharing views on snow safety, options and helping the group dynamic by voicing his ideas and opinions. What he has done in Bakhmaro/Adjari is astonishing.

In recent years we have skied in Kashmir, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, heli in Georgia (Gudauri), France, Italy and on and on. This is one of the best ski experiences I have been on.

26/01/2020
We have just returned from an exceptional week in Powder Project's lodge in the high Alpine above Bakhmaro. Ingo Schlutius and his team were simply fantastic. It was clear that safety was at the forefront of Ingo's mind at all times but he consistently put us on the powder. On arrival, the mountains looked very windblown and scarred but this team clearly know the area very well and are able to sniff out the good lines on the powder. Every day seemed to get better and better: from amazing tree lines, to open runs from the peak; on our last day we skied chest deep powder and were reluctant to leave. The Georgian hospitality was fantastic with great food and good times. I can't recommend this trip highly enough. It really was an epic adventure and great fun.
Thanks to all at Powderproject.ch and I hope to ski with you again. Scotty

Bakhmaro January 2020

What a fantastic place! Powderproject Bakhmaro is a professionally run extremely hospitable operation. From start to finish everything is dealt with in a smooth and efficient manner.

Transfers are well organised especially given the terrain between Kutaisi and the town of Bakhmaro. Once you arrive at the lodge you are looked after by the amazing lodge staff who produce unbelievable amounts of high-quality local food and drink to keep you sustained during your visit.

The guides and cat drivers are of the highest quality and the cats themselves are of very high quality.

The terrain offers a great mixture of high alpine, coastal pine forest and gladed birch trees which is unique to any other area I had been in before. Therefore over the course of a week, there is plenty of variety to keep you entertained. There is certainly plenty of snow as well, even early season, despite a few days with no new snow the scale of the ski area ensures there are always new pockets to open up and explore fresh lines.

Overall Powderproject offers an amazing experience at a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a ski/snowboard adventure into this beautiful part of Georgia.

What the team have built in Bakhmaro is exceptional. Yes the rooms are a little noisy and the power went of a couple of times (immediately fixed) but that's all just part of the experience. Georgia was a total surprise, we were aware the snow could be amazing and the terrain was going to be great but meeting the people and eating the food was an absolute delight!

Its quite far from Scotland but I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great skiing and is looking for an adventure.

The quality of the guiding by Bernd and his team is second to none. Perfect balance of safety and fun. Ingo and his team have pulled off the remarkable and I can't wait to see it grow (no too much!) over the next few years.

We will be back no questions

We’ve spent an awesome week in Bakhmaro. The atmosphere has been so warm… People from Georgia in the hut were so nice, the cook Bacho very kind and the food was excellent… Barbara was lovely, our guide Berndt… so nice. And our free-rider colleagues were… super nice. The different views from different hills in Backmaro… were unbelievable. We could see the Black Sea, Turkey, Russia, High Caucasus… And free-ride in open spaces or in the forest… amazinggggg. The last day we were skiing with Ingo and we didn’t repeat any line… all mountain for us… always looking for new lines until we got exhausted. Snow cat drivers were very good. An unforgettable week. So… thanks to all Ingo Team for this lovely week and… SEE YOU NEXT SEASON!!!

Amazing and unique experience

Visited mid Feb 2019. Felt like an adventure. Picked up from Kutaisi airport- transport by minibus until couldn't drive any further. Quick shimmy into skiwear and transfer to a waiting snowmobile. Another hour or so uphill via abandoned villages - not so many local people own tracked vehicles. Distant yellow light came into view, got larger, only occupied house in an otherwise empty village. Open the door, into the warmth with laughter, eating and drinking, accordion and singing. Mainly German and Austrian customers, some Brits - maybe around 30 guests in total. All male. friendly Georgian crew looking after us and operating the equipment. New Zealand and German guides.

We were virtually the only people in the mountain range and there was a LOT of powder, refilled daily. Lots of trees, pillows and jumps everywhere (some massive). Sometimes skiied along roads and through back gardens. Mixture of boarders and skiers. Most would be advanced or expert. Nice views out to the black sea and to mount Elbrus.

Powerful Cats with good drivers properly trained in Austria. Ingo and his guys scouted the area, widened the forest tracks and basically created an enormous private playground.

Rode hard every day, on the last day we did over 5700 metres of vertical. Downsides - accommodation basic and walls thin so bring earplugs/noise cancelling headphones. Traditional food hearty rather than gourmet. Quid pro pro of having the mountain to yourself is there are no bars or restaurants in the evenings - so you make your own entertainment. Kutaisi is definitely worth a couple of days - plenty to see, good restaurants and SO cheap.

Contender for my best winter trip so far and I'm looking to return in 2020.

We were in Bakhmaro in December 2018 and had an amazing week with a lot of powder days. Tree runs, open bowls, pillow lines, skiing between through the houses of Bakhmaro - so many different possibilities to ski! But it was not only skiing and the fresh powder what made our week so amazing - Ingo and his team made this week unforgetable. Especially New Years Eve was an unique experience with fantastic georgian food, chacha, dancing and celebrating the begining of 2019.

Nice freeride at Bakhmaro with a perfect team

We were at Bakhmaro the last week of December 2018. We were looking for a place where there is already snow at this time. We were very happy with our snowboarding trip, the forecast was good, deep snow.

The guide is very professional and super nice. The lodge team (Georgian staff) is really cool, the lodge is comfortable and we eat really well.

My boyfriend broke his bindings the second day. The staff repair temporarily his bindings and order a new bindings in a shop in town and deliver it the next day morning. When we know the place (Bakhmaro is lost in the mountain), we can say that Georgians are incredible!

Everything was perfect, this experience is unforgettable!
We hope to come back soon

Last February I went to Bakhmaro with big expectations ... and they definitely were exceeded!
"Japanese" treeskiing, pillows, wide area - the weather doesn't matter because there are so many possibilities. Our catdriver Tengo and our guide Bernd Wingert know the area like they had never done anything else before.
We had awesome snow conditions, lots of fresh powder but also sunny days with views to the greater caucasus and the black sea.
The very hospitable and caring team makes sure that you feel welcome and you're having everything you need.
Delicious traditional Georgian food, a simple but comfortable lodge and the Georgian culture create a special atmosphere where you can spend a good time with skiing powder, eating, relaxing and making new experiences.
Last but not least a perfect organisation by Ingo Schlutius and his team: Once you have arrived at the airport there is nothing to worry about anymore because the transfer (by minibus and cat) and your stay in Bakhmaro are arranged very well.
It was an incredible week with many great memories and I'm looking forward to come back next season!
