Cat Skiing Soldier Mountain Packages

Soldier Mountain serves up a great experience to ski or snowboard the virgin snow of the Idaho backcountry, without any of the crowds that you might see at places like Sun Valley where it feels like fresh powder disappears quickly.

With Soldier Mountain Cat Skiing, your access to the backcountry is either in a snowcat with a cabin on the back, or via a Trax All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) if you have a small private group.

Check out the Soldier Mountain cat skiing overview for information on location, terrain and reviews.

Soldier Mountain Cat Skiing Day Packages

You can book a day of cat skiing as a solo, couple or small group to join others for a mixed group snowcat for what’s dubbed a “Cat Scratch” trip. A minimum of 6 participants is required for the trip to run. Mixed group cat skiing operates on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Or you can book out the whole snowcat for a day of private cat skiing for your group of up to 12 people. Private cat skiing is on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (plus other days as available).

A day of cat skiing at Soldier Mountain features the guided snowcat skiing or snowboarding, with an average of 7 to 10 runs and 10,000 to 15,000 vertical feet of skiing, with a maximum of 1:6 guide to guest ratio as a lead and tail guide are provided. The package includes the use of avalanche safety equipment comprising a backpack with shovel and probe, and an avalanche beacon. A briefing will be held regarding use of the safety equipment.

Lunch is taken in the snowcat between runs so that you don’t miss out on getting runs in. You can purchase a brown bag lunch which includes a sandwich with a variety of meats and cheese, chips, cookies, and a range of drinks. Water and energy drinks will also be on supply throughout the day to stay hydrated.

If one day of cat skiing just isn't enough to satiate your appetite, you could stay overnight in the Fairfield motel. Or private groups can have a multi-day trip staying in a yurt, starting with 2 days of cat skiing and 1 night yurt stay. The use of the yurt is exclusively for your group.

If you want to check availability or have any questions, please get in contact.

Ability Level

Whilst the terrain includes some mellow meadows, the tenure also includes glades and some steeper slopes and challenging terrain.

Cat skiing at Soldier Mountain is not suitable for those who are new to powder skiing or snowboarding. For participation in one of the mixed group snowcats, as a minimum, you should be a strong advanced skier or snowboarder and ideally an expert, and have experience at riding powder and varied off-piste snow conditions. You should feel comfortable skiing or riding in amongst trees, and at a decent speed. If you feel you might not have the endurance for a full day of snowcat skiing, you can always sit out a run and stay in the snowcat.

For private groups, the minimum ability level is advanced, which includes experience with off-piste snow conditions.

It doesn’t matter if you have limited or no backcountry experience, as your guides will tell you know what you need to do.

More information on the snow and terrain can be found on the snow/terrain overview and the video there should also give you a pretty good idea.

Trax Skiing

You can elevate your experience further with Trax Skiing, which is available for private groups of up to 4 people with one guide. The Trax ATV travels 2.5 times faster than the snowcat and it has more agility to access tighter and steeper terrain, so you can get more vertical in each day, and have access to a wider range of terrain and more untracked powder.

Typical Itinerary

  • 8:30am: Meet at the base lodge of Soldier Mountain and get geared up. Avalanche safety packs will be provided. The guides will give you a rundown of what to expect for the day.
  • 9am: Take the lifts up the mountain to meet the snowcat at the top chair, then safety briefing.
  • 9:30am – Cat skiing runs and have snacks and water in between runs
  • Lunch – Lunch is eaten in the snowcat in between runs. You can purchase a brown bag lunch at the start of the day.
  • Afternoon – More skiing and snowboarding then return back to “civilization” at the base of the ski area at approximately 4:00pm

Lodging

If you want to score multiple days of cat skiing/Trax skiing or combine the cat skiing with resort skiing, there are a few options for lodging. You can stay at the Prairie Inn in Fairfield or there are cabins and vacation rentals nearby. Or if you’re a van lifer or have a motorhome, there is camping in the north end of the parking lot at Soldier Mountain Ski Resort.

Yurt Stay

If you want to transform your backcountry experience into a multi-day trip without leaving the beauty of Soldier Mountain, you have the option to stay at the mid-mountain yurt retreat if you’ve booked private cat skiing.

The yurt can be rented in a multi-day cat skiing package. This combination allows your group to spend two days in the backcountry while staying at the yurt in between your days skiing or snowboarding. The yurt sleeps 12, so gather some friends for an overnight experience.

The snowcat can provide transportation to and from the yurt, and transport your belongings for your overnight stay.

The yurt is equipped with most of what you would need for a rustic night in the woods. Guests will need to provide their own food, beverages, clothing, sleeping bags, pillows, first aid supplies, and any other winter gear needed for sleeping in a wilderness yurt. A list of equipment that’s provided at the yurt will be provided.
