South Lake

South Lake is a great place to base your Lake Tahoe holiday.

There are tons of Hotels & Motels to choose from depending on budget, I stayed at the Fantasy Inn & Wedding Chapel based on price and the hot tub in my room. The staff were helpful & friendly and it's right next to IHOP for breakfast and McD's is directly across the road but is a little walk to the Casinos. There are lots of dining options with nice restaurants in most of the Casino's and lots of bars & restaurants scattered around the main shopping district and then all your usual fast food suspects along the main road.

There are a few really good Snowboard/Ski shops (Shoreline/Boardinghouse) in South Lake which are well stocked and well priced with knowledgeable staff on hand & as a result I spent up large when I wasn't riding Heavenly which has a gondola terminal in one of the main courtyards in South Lake.

Reno isn't far to drive from South Lake on down days and has gun ranges you can fire all kinds of handguns & automatic weapons.

I'll be back.....

A Great Base to Visit Ski Resorts

27/03/2015
I loved all the contradictions of South Lake Tahoe; an eclectic mix of rich tourists glamming it up, ski bums, laid back vacationers, and try-hards at the casinos hoping they’ll win big.

It’s great that there’s a huge variety of lodging too, including luxury hotels (such as The Landing) and deluxe condos, good value casino hotels and very inexpensive motels, some of which look downright seedy!

The presence of the casinos makes it a rather different ski town to most found in the US. The casinos are more classy than the many dodgy Reno casinos, but it’s a far cry from Las Vegas, both in terms of the magnitude as well as the classiness. The Stateline casinos also seem very smoky compared to Las Vegas where they have good air conditioning systems, so wear a gas mask if you don’t like cigarette smoke.

All in all, it’s a great ski town with plenty of diversity, a range of ski resorts to visit, and the picturesque Lake Tahoe on its doorstep.
