Hokkaido Progression Safari

This tour explores 2 distinctive zones in Hokkaido that are renowned for their abundant powder: the Otaru and Furano areas. This Hokkaido ski tour includes private transportation providing greater flexibility to visit the resort with the best conditions to ride at each day. You will get to explore up to 8 resorts during the 12 day road trip and immerse yourself in the amazing local Japanese culture.

Program Focus:

The main goal is to explore Hokkaido, skiing/riding as many ski areas and as much deep powder as possible. You will also be immersing yourself in local Japanese culture and enjoying the many culinary delights Japanese cuisine has to offer.

Education is the other vital component of the program. The focus is on avalanche safety and education and the guides will constantly reinforce these principles out on the mountain. The program starts with a mandatory, comprehensive avalanche safety training session which includes (but is not limited to): theory; single/multiple burial training; probing; strategic shoveling and snowpack testing and analysis.

Any skiers looking to improve their freeride technique can be given regular feedback on the mountain and we can get out the video camera for some video analysis sessions. All in all, the program is very detailed and potentially rewarding on many different levels. You’ll have fun and probably learn a lot.

Group Size:

There is a maximum of 6 guests per group, led by 1 guide from The Adventure Project. There is a limit of 3 groups (of up to 6) per session.

Minimum Ability Level:

This tour is aimed at advanced to expert skiers and boarders. You should be comfortable riding in tighter trees and in deep powder (the powder is nice and light, with an average water content of only 4%). You should be comfortable riding double diamond terrain in variable snow conditions.

Mandatory Equipment:

Guests must have an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe (plus pack) and uphill capability (skis with touring bindings/skins or a splitboard/skins/collapsible touring poles or powder board with snowshoes/collapsible poles). If you’ve not used any of this gear before, then no problem, you will be given comprehensive training in their use.

How To Get There:

Your ultimate destination is to get to Sapporo Chitose for the start of each session. Most international flights will fly to Tokyo Narita International Airport and then you will take a connecting flight from the Tokyo domestic airport at Haneda, to fly to Sapporo New Chitose Airport. Relatively few international carriers outside of Asia fly direct to Sapporo. Your guides will meet & greet you at Chitose airport & transfer you to your accommodation in Furano.

Ski Areas:

You will be exploring some of the best powder zones in Japan for 12 days using private transportation.

The first part of the trip is based in Furano where you can access ski areas including Furano, Kamui & TomamuSahoro, Mt Racey & the Daisetsuzan National Park.

The second part of the trip is based in Otaru where you can access ski areas including Kiroro, TeineKokusai, Tengu & Asari.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

Arrive Sapporo, New Chitose Airport (CTS). Pickup by The Adventure Project. Drive to Furano (125 km – 1 hr 55 min drive)

For the next 6 nights you will stay at the ski-in/ski-out New Prince Furano Hotel.

Furano is a nice blend of traditional Japanese culture and a Western ski resort feel and is the ideal base for our exploration of northern Hokkaido and is considered to be the capital of the Hokkaido Powder Belt. Furano has amazing skiing and it’s worth spending several days exploring the resort. Furano boasts long runs with decent vertical (959m 0r 3,146ft) and has some great terrain. There’s plenty of fun tree skiing and secret stashes in the resort but our favorite area has to be the “Premium Zone”, an awesome area of open bowls and trees accessed by a quick 25 minute hike. The powder stays fresh in this zone for days and we’ve had some epic turns in this area in the past.

Day 2 – Ski/Ride Furano

AM Avalanche safety training and then warm up skiing / riding at Furano ski area.

Day 3- 6 Ski/Ride Furano Area

For the next 4 days you will chase the best conditions in the Furano area which might include Kamui Links, Tomamu & Asahidake.

Day 7 – Transfer to Otaru (150 km – 2hr 33 min drive).

Potential to ski a resort on the way to Otaru and then on to your accommodation (Grand Park Hotel Otaru) for the next 4 nights.

Otaru is a beautiful port city in the west of Hokkaido on Ishikari Bay. It is famous for it’s canal that runs through the center of the city, lined by many shops, restaurants and converted warehouses. It is the ideal location for exploring the ski areas closer to Sapporo and getting a really traditional Japanese experience.

Day 8 - 10 – Ski/Ride Otaru area

For the next 3 days you will ski and snowboard around the Otaru area. Options include Kiroro, Tiene Highlands, Sapporo Kokusai.

Day 11 – Potential 1/2 day skiing on-route to Sapporo

Subject to conditions and group consensus, it may be possible for a last chance to ski/ride at one of the ski areas nearby on-route to Sapporo where you will spend your final night (35 km – 37 min).

The last night of accommodation is not included in the package however there are many inexpensive options available.

Day 12 – Departure Day

Transfer (58 km – 51 min) to New Chitose Airport (CTS) for return home. This is not included in the package due to the varying times when people need to depart however it is an inexpensive and easy transfer by bus or train to the airport.

* This schedule is subject to change and revision and you will be sent a specific itinerary for your trip, before departure. There are many different resorts that can be skied during the trip. Ski areas will be chosen based on the motivations of the group and the conditions of the day. Having private transportation allows maximum flexiblity.
