Local Partners

In many parts of New Zealand HAKA TOURS works with highly reputable local specialist operators. These local partners are all passionate about the activities they operate and offer the same high standards as HAKA TOURS.

Passports & Visas
All travellers must have a valid passport for international travel and many countries require at least 6 months validity from the date of return and some countries require a machine-readable passport. It is important that you ensure that you have valid passports, visas and re-entry permits which meet the requirements of immigration and other government authorities. Any fines, penalties, payments or expenditures incurred as a result of such documents not meeting the requirements of those authorities will be your sole responsibility. Visit the NZ Immigration website to see if you need a visa to holiday here: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/

Luggage Limits
Within New Zealand travel, each passenger is entitled to take one case, the sum of its length, width and depth not to exceed 160 cm (63 inches), weight limit 20 kilos along with a small day pack. Airlines permit only one cabin bag per person, in which personal items such as cameras, make-up etc. should be carried, though you need to check with your airline provider as to their specific requirements. Over-limit luggage cannot be carried. HAKA TOURS operates in a similar way and asks if you have over the above limit to please get in touch before your tour. Baggage is at 'owner's risk'. Most airports, hotels & hostels offer storage services for additional luggage.

Important Information Exclusion of Liability
Whilst HAKA TOURS will take all reasonable steps to provide an enjoyable tour, it accepts no liability for any loss of enjoyment experienced by passengers due to circumstances beyond its control. HAKA TOURS further accepts no liability for any loss beyond its reasonable control and provides no warranties in addition to those set out under the The Fair Trading Act 1986, and nothing herein restricts any passenger from exercising their rights and remedies pursuant to law. Your Travel Agent will forward booking confirmations and other payments to HAKA TOURS on your behalf, but your Travel Agent is not our agent for the purpose of receipt of monies. Receipt of booking confirmations and subsequent payments by the travel agent does not constitute receipt of those monies by HAKA TOURS and the Travel Agent has no authority expressed or implied to receive monies on our behalf. There is no liability on the part of HAKA TOURS in respect to any monies paid to the passenger's Travel Agent unless and until HAKA TOURS notifies the passenger (by way of a booking confirmation advice or payment receipt advice) that monies have been received by HAKA TOURS. The optional tour excursions are not operated by, or at the direction of, or on behalf of HAKA TOURS, its employees or agents or any other persons or companies associated with HAKA TOURS. All Optional Activities are an additional cost to the tour price and by taking bookings for these tours, HAKA TOURS acts as each optional tour operator's agent. These tours include the services of operators other than HAKA TOURS e.g. hoteliers, airlines and optional tour excursions, which are not under the direct control of HAKA TOURS, and whilst HAKA TOURS takes all reasonable care in selecting these operators, it cannot accept responsibility for those operators' conduct or the conduct of their representative employees or agents or for any ramifications of that conduct. On tours including activities such as trekking, swimming and snorkelling, passengers accept that degrees of risk are involved. No passenger will be permitted to embark or continue on tour while their mental or physical condition is, in the opinion of any representative of HAKA TOURS, such as to render them incapable of caring for themselves, or whereby they become objectionable to other passengers, or they become a hazard to themselves or other passengers. HAKA TOURS will not be responsible for expenses resulting in such persons being precluded from completing the tour.

Amendment Fees
There will be no charge to request a change of tour departure after the original booking has been confirmed, as long as it is done more than two months prior to the original tour departure date. Any further changes or amendments within 6 weeks of the tour departure, will incur a $500 NZD amendment fee (except when change is due to HAKA TOURS cancelling a tour departure). If there is any change to the price of the tour that you change your booking too, since the time of your original reservation, the new tour price will apply to the new reservation.

Pre-Booked Activities
The activities' retail prices are set by other operators and may rise at any time, out of our control. Therefore at 30 days prior to tour departure HAKA TOURS reserves the right to charge customers any difference in price in order to match the most recent price at that time. We estimate that activity prices usually go up 2-5% per year. The price difference will appear on your account as "Activity Price Alignment". Furthermore, by pre-booking additional activities, you also confirm your acceptance of our "Optional Activities Booked On Tour" policy below which are also operated by a voucher process.

Any activity bookings made within 30 days of departure are subject to availability.

Optional Activities Booked On Tour
Activities booked on tour will be charged at the standard retail rate. We operate a voucher system with our activity partners which means we pay in full via a "voucher" for any optional activities instead of you paying the activity provider direct. The activities you select whilst on tour will be added to your "Activity Balance Sheet" with the full balance taken at the end of the tour or when your activity balance exceeds $500 NZD. By operating a voucher system with our activity suppliers, we are able to better manage tour logistics. Your activity balance can be paid via MasterCard, Visa or cash. Credit card payments have a 2% credit card processing fee. Haka Tours does not qualify for any group booking discount with our activity suppliers. By agreeing to these terms and conditions you agree to our activity voucher process whilst on tour.

Itineraries
Itineraries are subject to alteration without notice and intended as a guide only. Alterations may come about due to road or weather conditions, strikes, public holidays, local festivals and cultural or other reasons. Due to the nature of the terrain and remote areas, weather fluctuations can adversely affect road conditions that may necessitate alterations to itinerary with little or no notice. Any additional expense incurred by the passenger is not HAKA TOURS responsibility. HAKA TOURS can give no guarantee as to the exact arrival and departure times for carriers and operators used by HAKA TOURS in the tour and HAKA TOURS will not be liable for failure of any other services or attractions beyond its control.

Minimum and Maximum Numbers
As is normally the case with group tours, a minimum number of bookings are required in order for a tour to be financially viable and to have a pleasant group atmosphere. In the event that adequate numbers cannot be achieved, it may be necessary to cancel a scheduled departure and to offer the nearest possible alternative date (or a full refund of monies paid). The date on which the decision is made whether a tour will operate is usually four weeks before the scheduled departure date. In the event of a breakdown or other unforeseen circumstances, the operator reserves the right to substitute vehicles other than those specified to ensure the operation of a tour.

Haka Tours restricts guest numbers to a maximum of 16 per tour. Prior to making any travel arrangements such as flights, customers are required to receive confirmation from HAKA TOURS that there is adequate space on the chosen departure date, once any other booking requests are processed. In this case, confirmation is in the form of a ‘Welcome Letter’ sent via email by HAKA TOURS

Maximum numbers in shared dorms
Our included accommodation is dorm share (unless you are upgrading to a private room). While our maximum number of guests in a dorm is 6, on rare occasions up to 8 tour guests will share a dorm.

Smoking
Government regulations forbid smoking in tourist coaches. The vast majority of hostels also are non-smoking, with some having designated smoking areas outside.

Customer Feedback
If a problem occurs during your tour, then it is in your own best interests to advise your Tour Manager immediately so that steps can be taken to resolve the matter there and then. If you remain dissatisfied, any complaint must be made in writing to us within 30 days.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is your responsibility. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade strongly recommends you obtain travel insurance at the time you pay for your travel. Failure to obtain travel insurance is at your own risk. When obtaining travel insurance you must declare all pre-existing medical conditions and any adventurous activities, e.g. skiing, mountain biking, etc.

Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) If you are injured whilst in New Zealand, ACC may be able to help with the cost of the treatment and support you need whilst you're here. However, it is important to be aware that you cannot sue for personal injury - ACC replaces that right. Furthermore, ACC only covers treatment and rehabilitation costs whilst in New Zealand; it is not a replacement for travel insurance and does not cover illness, disrupted travel plans or emergency travel to get you back home.

Fitness and Medicals

Some activities are strenuous of nature. Passengers should be of reasonable health and fitness and carry all required medication. HAKA TOURS must be advised of any prior medical conditions at time of booking.

Lift Pass Refunds - Snow Tours
Please make sure you have suitable travel insurance when on one of our snow tours. Unfortunately, we pre-book our lift passes and these are unable to be refunded if you injure yourself on tour.

Private Group Tours
If we are under-taking a private group tour for you, there are some changes to our standard Terms and Conditions. A non-refundable deposit of 20% is required to confirm the booking and full payment is due 2 months prior to arrival. Cancellations within 2 months prior to arrival will incur a 100% cancellation fee. Amendments within 2 months prior to arrival will incur a $100 admin fee and any additional fees charged by and 3rd party suppliers. Please take in to account an additional $25 NZD bank fee if paying from an overseas bank account.

Great way to get familiar with NZ ski areas

04/09/2023
I enjoyed this trip. It was a lot of fun! The hosts (tour leaders George and Grant- we had two at different times) were great and did a good job of managing people and logistics. They worked very hard to make the trip smooth and successful. My peers on the tour were fun to ski and travel with too! I recommend this trip with four qualifications to be aware of.

1. The dorm and bunk bed arrangements are cramped with mixed gender and sometimes other travelers not from the tour in your hostel room.

2. The club fields with nutcracker rope tows (Craigieburn, Broken River, Olympus) are not suitable for intermediates. Best to be an advanced or expert skier. The terrain is also not intermediate. If you are a snowboarder - best if you are regular footed or good at switch and very brave to ride the nutcrackers. After 2-3 days on the nutcrackers I was sore and had some bruises.

3. While the local hosts are excellent, fun, and personable locals who have been to the areas before, they do not guide you on the mountain in terms of which chutes are best or where the best snow is. You have to explore the resorts on your own or with other tour members. The resorts are on the small side so this is doable, but there is no "guided" skiing in the true sense of the word.

4. The snow conditions are coastal (often warm, wet and heavy) and the grooming variable and minimal at many areas. I love to ski any conditions -- but there was another person on the trip who seemed to expect conditions similar to the Alps or the Rockies and grumbled a lot about what I found to be great low altitude, southern hemisphere skiing.

Had a great time bombing around the South Island to 6 different ski areas with Haka Tours. The guides were excellent, their bus is up to the challenges of the steep roads to the snow, and the group was fun and positive.

Just go!!

We joined a mixed group (between 24-77) of 10 with mixed abilities between intermediate and advanced level. We were very lucky as the mixed group complemented each other in on and off snow activities with lots and lots of laughter and smiles. Our guide, Simon was fantastic giving us lots of options and freedom to choose what, where and when. This trip was a perfect intro into the different snow fields of the south island.
Absolutely loved it!!

It was a good way to get to Queenstown from Christchurch and to meet other skiers. If one has the time to do so I would recommend this tour.

There was no on snow guiding and participants were left to form own groups hence no ability grouping. Accomodation was in youth hostels so basic, but in keeping with a low cost tour.

Tour guide Lizzie was vivacious, organised and very safety conscious.

NZ has some of the best heli accessed skiing on this planet

Jakub Demacek
30/08/2018
I've skied all over the world, but I've had no idea that some of the best skiing is down in New Zealand. I was totally blown away by the landscape, the quality of services and the laid back attitude of everyone I've met. Since most of the ski fields are located on the outskirts of the Southern Alps, the best way to get into the heart of the mountains is by a helicopter.
The tour starts in Christchurch and on our very first day, we went out into the Arrowsmiths range with Methven Heliskiing. We were lucky with 30cm of blower with great stability on a perfect bluebird day. After first 4 runs, we couldn't stop and ended up with our minds blown and 11 runs in total later. Our guide from Haka Tours Chris was the best ever to make sure everything ran smoothly and keeping all our options open for the days coming. The weather turned the next day and so resort skiing was on schedule. Mt. Hutt is a great place to cruise around and ski off piste when the conditions allow it. Next up - Aoraki/Mt. Cook heli skiing ... Originally we were supposed to ski the Tasman glacier, which would've made it a nice scenic day, but since the weather wasn't perfect, the heli operator ran heli skiing only - no complaints :) We even opted for another extra day of heli skiing and that turned out to be a good call, since we were taken to even better mountain range in the area with magnificent scenery and great skiing too. We stayed at the legendary Hermitage hotel while in the area and also all the other accommodation was on par with our expectations. Next up - Wanaka and Southern Lakes Heli. Unfortunately the weather didn't allow us to ski all terrain and we ended up skiing som crust before moving onto corn. Nevertheless, Souther Heli has the best lunches :) On our last day we were ski-touring in the Treble Cone area in nice weather and you just can't go wrong being in the mountains with great people, good snow and good weather. We finished our trip in the craziest ski town on this planet - Queenstown. Party everywhere, 4 resorts within driving distance, beautiful scenery and adrenaline junkies paradise with activities ranging from Jet boating, paragliding, rafting and bungy jumping. We opted for the crazy ride with Shotover Jet and the highest bungy in the region (134m)
Overall I must thank Haka tours and their guide Chris for putting this tour together. It's been an unbelievable week skiing and having fun. I would recommend this tour to anybody and I believe it was worth every penny.

I moved to New Zealand this year and I love skiing. As I had no idea, where to go for ski holidays, I was really happy to find powder hounds and this kind of ski safari.
This tour gave me an idea about these beautiful mountains and the amazing views we had on the slopes. We were always about to stop and take pictures of the surroundings. Middle Earth! And always sunshine and enough snow.
We had a great mixture of Nationalities, age and skiing/ boarding levels. From the first day everyone found a group of people with a similar level of ability. We were a mixed group of age, skiers and boarders of an advanced level and had a lot of fun.
I was really happy to spend the extra Dollar for a separate room with bathroom, but the younger ones shared rooms, bathrooms and chats. It was really a nice group, no one excluded or left behind. I can recommend this tour to everyone who loves the snow - at any age !
Our tour guide was friendly, helpful, relaxed and had a story to nearly every place we drove through or went to. Fun loving chap ;)

Haka Tours South Island Snow Odyssey

Had such a good 12 days on the snow odyssey tour. We had pretty poor snow and conditions, relatively speaking but Burto (our guide) knew how to get the absolute best out of the mountains and the conditions. Everywhere we went was well organised and hassle free. Accommodation on the tour was great - it is however fairly rustic in places, but you are made aware of it beforehand. Such a different experience to ski in the club fields than to ski the large mega resorts of Europe and Japan. Absolutely brilliant time, and the group and Burto made the tour into one of the best trips I've ever taken.

Good dynamics in the group. Excellent guiding. Friendliness of all. Accommodation a little below expectation at Pinewood Lodge Queenstown. Breakfast supplies hit and miss, run out at different times of bananas, peanut butter etc.., more planning needed as in maybe having a checklist of provisions. Also, the bus the group traveled in needs to retire. Springs poking through bottomed out seats, blowing black smoke, exhaust fumes present inside. "Murray" got us back to Christchurch, the only good thing about this vehicle. But overall, goal achieved: lots of fun in friendly non judgemental environment improved my skiing in one week off the grid.

Haka Tours - Winner of Best Tour

27/09/2014
As a beginner Snowboarder Haka 7 Day Snow Safari was perfect for my needs. They provided everything from the board and boots, to an incredible guide with so much knowledge.

My tour also had highly experienced individuals and it was perfect for them too. They were taken to some of the most pristine snow, untouched by others.

In the 7 days our little group became a family. Eating, breathing, boarding together. I wanted a tour that had a balance of time on the mountain combined with seeing and experiencing New Zealand. Haka Tours 100% hit the mark.

The tour leader, Burto created a relaxed yet seamlessly organised week that has won my personal "Best Tour EVER" award.

I am already working out when I can get back to NZ to go on another tour with Haka.

If you are looking for a week long snow tour, don't look past Haka Tours. You wont be disappointed.

Hearty thanks to Haka Tours for a great great trip through peak mountains, lake towns, lodges, bars, restaurants, barista stations, spas, and any number of side trips for canyon leaps and more.

In the moment times all day, all ways, where the skills get better, the snow is different every day, and where everyone else is pretty much with the same bent for snow time.

Christchurch to Queenstown and back where dedicated and knowledgeable guidemasters set it up daily for an easy and enjoyable blast. Do it and do it again tomorrow.

Snow Safari is perfect for me. It's all sorted - just get on the bus in the morning and they provide the gear, the lift passes, guide you on the mountain and offer so much local knowledge.

The social scene is amazing. Life long friends made. You can have dinner with your crew and go out drinking if you choose.

I have done it 4 years in a row and it has always catered to my different needs.

Absolutely love the local guides and the smaller, personal crew you travel with.

Amazing. I aim to come back every year with Haka!
