Refugio Frey

Refugio Frey in Patagonia, Argentina, sits by a serene lake surrounded by stunning red-glowing granite formations. Perfect for skiing, the zone offers diverse terrain for a variety of ability levels.

Refugio Frey has modern comforts like electricity, running water, and a stocked kitchen, including local beverages. The hut complements the breathtaking natural scenery, making it an exceptional ski destination. All guests sleep in a common room - please make contact for questions about the lodging. 

Ability & Fitness

The area around the Refugio has slopes between 25 and 40 degrees.

This tour requires a medium to high level of physical fitness and skiing ability. Alpine climbing expertise is not necessary, but some experience navigating terrain with crampons and ice axes is strongly recommended.

Equipment

For this tour, you only need the basic backcountry equipment and ice axe and crampons. With advance notice, it is possible to rent all the equipment.

Guiding & Hosting

This tour has a person 100% in charge of hosting and customer experience who will be available 24/7 for any unforeseen event or need. The maximum guest to guide ratio is 4. The minimum number of skiers is 3 and the maximum is 6.

The guides are locals of the area and known the terrain well. All are certified and qualified to make you feel safe and comfortable.

Itinerary

Day 1

The adventure begins at Cerro Catedral, where you’ll meet your guide for a warm welcome, gear check, and safety briefing. From there, the journey to Refugio Frey starts with a ski ascent through stunning alpine terrain, crossing the iconic Col de los Vientos. Along the way, you’ll enjoy your first descents, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Catedral Range.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Refugio Frey, a cozy mountain refuge nestled among snow-covered granite spires.

After settling in, a hearty dinner awaits, and plans for the following day’s adventures are made. 

Day 2

On the second day, wake up to a sunrise over the Andes and a warm breakfast before heading out for a full day of ski touring.

The terrain around Refugio Frey is a skier’s dream, featuring legendary couloirs and towering granite needles. After a morning of carving fresh lines, you’ll return to the refuge for a hot lunch before venturing out again in the afternoon to explore more of this incredible backcountry paradise.

Dinner and a crackling fire provide the perfect end to a day of adventure.

Day 3

Day three takes you deeper into the Catedral Range. With your guide, you’ll seek out untouched powder, hidden bowls, and challenging lines that offer spectacular descents and unforgettable views. This full day of skiing showcases the best that the area has to offer, with plenty of opportunities to push your limits or simply enjoy the serenity of the snowy landscape.

Back at the refuge, a well-earned meal and camaraderie with your group make for another memorable evening. 

Day 4

On the final day, enjoy a last morning of skiing around Refugio Frey, soaking in the magic of the terrain one last time.

After packing up, you’ll make the descent back to Cerro Catedral, carving your way through scenic slopes and reflecting on an incredible journey.

By the afternoon, you’ll arrive back at the resort, wrapping up the adventure with lasting memories of pristine powder, dramatic landscapes, and the warmth of Refugio Frey.

Terms & Conditions for Esnativa

Payments

  • Single programs require full payment upon booking.
  • For longer programs, a 50% deposit is required at the time of reservation. The balance must be paid 5 weeks before the program starts.
  • Bookings made less than 4 weeks before the trip starts must be accompanied by full payment.

Booking

  • Along with receipts, Esnativa will send a sample of the liability waiver for your signature upon meeting, and if necessary, an experience questionnaire.
  • Booking Conditions
  • Registration is subject to waiver completion and having travel insurance.

Changes and Cancellations

  • Esnativa reserves the right to modify or cancel itineraries or services due to weather or other reasons, without penalty.
  • Esnativa are not responsible for actions of third parties
  • In case of emergency, rescue costs may be the participant's responsibility.

Cancellation and Refunds

  • Refund if Esnativa cancels.
  • Penalties for client cancellation vary depending on notice period.

  • Esnativa Backcountry are not responsible for actions of independent suppliers.
  • Changes to the itinerary may be made for passenger comfort. Timely notification of any necessary changes will be provided.
