Araucanía Backcountry Guiding
If you're staying at Corralco Mountain Resort or in Malalcahuello and want to explore the vast backcountry in the region, Apex Backcountry provide day guiding services for backcountry ski touring and splitboarding for
private groups.
Note that the sample price per person is based on if you have 5 people in your group. See the Rates & Inclusions tab for information on rates that are scaled depending on how many people you have in your group.
Apex Backcountry can tailor a day for you and your group that aligns to your backcountry experience, ski or snowboard ability, fitness, terrain preferences, general objectives, and the weather and snow conditions.
One relatively easy option is the Lonquimay Volcano where initial vertical can be gained via the lifts and top T-bar of the Corralco Ski Resort. You could summit the volcano where you can see 10 volcanic summits including Tolhuaca, Sierra Velluda, Antuco, Callaqui, and Copahue to the North with the Sierra Nevada, Llaima, Sollipulli, Villarica, and LanIn to the South. Slightly North East you can see the Christmas Cone, Crater Navidad which began erupting on Christmas Day 1988 and over 13 months grew over 700 feet skyward. If the summit isn’t calling, you could tour the beautiful
side country to visit Crater Navidad for a look into the crater before making a descent and skinning back to the resort.
Another option is La Fusta, known for its colder temperatures and ability to conserve snow with many different routes to solitude. Access is easy utilizing old logging roads that tell stories of
past logging operations and their impact on the landscape. During the ascent you will learn about the native trees and the Araucaria which gives the region its name. Once out of the trees the upper bowl appears in all its splendor with a dozen distinct micro-zones, from the lunar appearance of “Moon Patrol” to the strict 50 degree “DJ Fran Lee”. From the summit you will appreciate the incredible Andes landscape with views stretching to the Argentinian
border.
Or an option is Sierra Nevada Volcano enroute to Termas Cañon del Blanco. You'll top out a volcano with unbridled views and drop 4,600 vertical feet to the hot springs.
Or you can upgrade to a longer day of guiding if you've got lofty objectives and want to use your headlamps to be out amongst it for sunrise or sunset.
The local certified guides have the ability to find the best snow everyday whether it be sunshine or snowstorm. The Apex Backcountry Guides are certified in avalanche hazard evaluation management, emergency wilderness first aid, glacier travel/rescue techniques, and customer care. With an average of 15 years experience guiding in the mountains and ranging from an AMGA member to ANGM Mountain Guides, the accredited team is committed to safety and continued professional development.
Groups
Day guiding is open to private groups of 1 to 6. As it's private guiding only, solos and duos can't join others as part of a mixed group. If you're interested in joining a group, you may wish to look at options for
multi-day guided trips with Apex.
