Best mountain in Victoria for those who love a pretty village with great eating options. Fabulous ski school and terrain for families learning the sport. Not as much on offer for advanced skiers unless the maze is open. Unfortunately the seriously ancient international poma is the only lift servicing this area.

Access to resort is excellent. Parking very good.

Pretty valley is a lovely walk as an option for those not skiing /riding.

I've been returning to falls annually for almost 20 years now and I love it!
Australian snow gets a lot of flack but Falls is pretty consistent!
If the snow is crap, theres always plenty to do. Well priced places to eat and drink and solid nightlife on the mountain. Always super easy to arrange a babysitter through Frueauf
I travel overseas annually, and i also go to perisher a fair bit but Falls is my resort of choice by far.
There is also plenty to do in summer if you want a nice family trip.

I first visited Falls Creek in my early 20s after numerous seasons in NSW ski fields. The friendliness, lack of lift queues, variable terrain, and reasonable priced on mountain accommodation brought me back again and again. I have now rarely returned to NSW even though it is closer, because it just doesn't compete.

Variously known by some quite derogatory terms (i.e. Flat Creek), Falls Creek has enough enjoyable aspects that any self-respecting powder hound can appreciate what it has to offer. For whilst it is never going to make it as a venue on the Freeride World Tour, what it lacks in skiable vertical & steeps, it more than makes up for with low crowds in the off-piste on powder days, some super backcountry, a cracking terrain park, world class cross-country trails & a ski-in ski-out village with more quality restaurants & bars than a ski resort this size has any right to.

Falls Creek is in Australia so first & foremost, everything costs an arm & probably a leg as well. But snow in the world’s driest continent is a fair old novelty, so of course it's gonna cost. The drive up can be traumatic if there is snow on the road. Road clearing here is at times poor & the overnight parking that lines the main route on the way up beyond Howmans Gap is akin to Brezovica in Kosovo – not great! To be fair, it is a little more orderly than Kosovo, but we have experienced absolute carnage in heavy snow on that road section. Makes driving up to Alpe d’Huez in France seem like a game of tiddlywinks (tongue firmly implanted in cheek)!

Falls Creek is for families, anyone else is possibly wondering what they are doing there. Seeing if you can ski most of the resort without turning is a worthy challenge. In fact, I remember a Falls Creek ski instructor jokingly telling me in the '80s (ouch!) that the first sign of fear when skiing, was turning. Sage words. We didn’t turn much……

Ski wise on a midweek powder morning, whilst Falls’ hardcore neighbour Mt Hotham is already tracked out by the massive 7.30am crew, perhaps a dozen powder seekers might be lined up for first chair on Summit. I wouldn’t have believed it either but have experienced it often enough to know that its true. Have had some cracking powder days here late in the season too (AFL Grand Final weekend in particular). When the sun is out, the steeper terrain on the north side gets baked by the sun, so ski it early on a fresh snow day. Away from Summit & International the terrain is relatively mellow. Wide enough for everyone to go stupid fast if they want, long enough back into the village to get a sense that the thigh muscles are fully engaged & functioning.

Aside from some secret stashes inbounds (yes there are still a few), out toward Mt McKay for some backcountry turns is the real juice at Falls. The longest skiable verticals in the area are of its summit, and only a short skin from the top of the Ruined Castle chair.

After hours, the village truly comes into its own. Australia’s best by far (what about Thredbo I hear northerners complain!). When the village roads are fully snow-covered, it beats Thredbo by a long way. The number & diversity of bars & restaurants is extraordinary. And they are keeping up some fantastic '80s traditions as well, like jugs of Harvey Wallbanger and such delights.

A friend once told me that Falls Creek puts up every barrier possible to making the resort accessible to the masses, but against all odds, they still come. So, if you can survive the trauma of getting to your overnight accommodation, then ‘Yippee’, all is now good in the world.

Don’t expect the world’s best skiing at Falls Creek, but like anywhere, on its day, sliding on snow here can be super-duper fun. Head up when the snow (& forecast) is good, don’t book too far ahead & avoid on weekends. Just remember that the age-old adage, ‘the first sign of fear is turning’ should be liberally applied ……

Falls Creek is a little further away from Melbourne than the very crowded Mt Buller, so Falls is a great place to go for a multi-day trip. It’s particularly well suited to intermediate riders and is also great for beginners and families.
