On this trip to Mt Olympus, we headed there with Black Diamond Safaris. It was fantastic being driven by Brett to take any stress out of getting there, and it certainly added to the fun of the day.

The snow quality in the lift-accessed area was a complete shambles, but thankfully with a degree of hiking, Brett was able to find awesome lines with half decent snow. His local knowledge really made us appreciate the joys of Mt Olympus.

Like other NZ club fields, hiking is required to get to many runs. However unlike some other club fields, disappointingly the top tow isn’t anywhere close to “the top”, so lots of hiking is required. You need to be very fit to ski here, but more importantly you need to be incredibly drinking fit to stay at Mt Olympus!

There’s a good chance of scoring freshies because mid-week it is almost deserted, particularly in the morning when the overnighters are still in bed or wandering around in a drunken daze. This ski field is highly recommended for adventurous and enthusiastic advanced and expert skiers (snowboarders may dislike all the traversing).

If you brave the most notorious ski road in NZ and make it to the top of the ski road, you will be in for a treat. Snow snow and snow as far as you can see. A couple of rope tows has you up at the hut where you can find a feed, dump your gear and if you're lucky even get a bed for the night. Then it's off to hit the slopes.

Lots of hidden little gems with cliffs, chutes and wide open expanses of snow. There's a highway traverse out to skier's left that offers some fantastic skiing on the right day once you've had enough of the more proximal goods. Then of course there is the famous Mt Olympus backcountry. This is real backcountry out here...wild, steep and definitely only for the brave.

So what's the downside to paradise? The access road and lack of lifts but you can always thumb a ride and learn to use a nutcracker. This small price of admission is well worth it. The snow here can be deep and deep. Definitely one for the true skier or those who are just game to see what they're made of, Mt Olympus is definitely a must ski.

After skiing most of the club fields for the last 18 years I finally bit the bullet and joined my standout favourite, Mt Olympus.

The best all round ski experience there is. Friendly, fun, intimate, cheap, great terrain and when it's on, world class snow. The lifts get you to easy to ski and fun terrain, but for little walking you are rewarded with awesome terrain to do your turns on. Hit the backcountry over the ridges and get a seriously remote feeling happening. Chutes and ridge lines go on for miles.

Topping this off is the best, but rustic "on mountain lodge" I have seen. It's half way up the field which is at the end of a box canyon with stunning views. Having a beer in the hot tub at night staring at the sky and the jagged peaks is a a million dollar experience in itself. If you want a party, there are always crew in the lodge who are ready to kick their heels up. (It only sleeps 38 and all in bunk beds). Everyone mucks in on kitchen duties and help the Chef do breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sounds a bit odd but it works very well.

Nutcracker rope tows are a head trip for the newbies to this sort of thing, but add to the feel of the place in a positive way.

Make sure you check this out when you ht NZ, you won't regret it and won't forget it.

Mt Olympus is awesome. When the snow is good its unbeatable. Zero crowds, cheap, everyone's friendly, and a mean atmosphere.

Mt Olympus is a hidden gem that more people are discovering, yet it remains uncrowded and possibly the friendliest field in NZ.

The skiing can be as good as anywhere, especially if you get snowed in or don't mind a bit of hiking (worth it just for the views!). The food is fantastic so definitely stay for a night, but make sure you are prepared for the hot tub, night skiing, or a dress-up party.

The accommodation has a rustic charm, but the clubbies have an upgrade planned. Too good to miss!

We have been members at Mt Olympus for years. We love its amazing terrain, unique character, great food and on-mountain accommodation. Like any club field, you have to adjust your thinking and become one of the family to get the most out of it. It's not hard. The club and its staff welcome everyone with open arms. You'll never experience anything like it.

Maybe the gods might choose another ski hill to spend their days, but for mere mortals, Mt Olympus is a beautiful location and certainly worth a visit. You gotta love a place that has a sign on the road stating '...chains and courage should be carried at all times.' Sets things up for an epic journey.

It's not the worst road to a NZ ski field, but probably up there in the top five. The big reasons to come to Mt Olympus are the snow quality and number of freshies still available days after its snowed. The terrain 'above the inbounds' and the sidecountry potential are added draws, as is the cooking from masterchef Mike and the mega cheap package deals available.

The drawbacks of Mt Olympus are that the main bowl is actually pretty small (60ish ha), the lifts are nutcrackers (you either love them or hate them!), the quality of the towbelts is poor and some visitors will find the accom and toilet facilities a bit confronting.

Despite the above, it would be fun being 'trapped' here with the 'gods' when it's dumped and the road is closed.
