The Kinta Naeba

The Kinta Naeba

The Kinta Naeba is a funky hotel with its concrete industrial feel that’s also retained plenty of Japanese decor. It’s within reasonable walking distance of Naeba Ski Resort & offers Japanese and Japanese/western combos. All rooms have a private toilet, and most also have a private bathroom. The hotel has a nice ambience in the main building with its lounge, bar and restaurant.

Where is the Kinta Naeba?

The Kinta Naeba overlooks the slopes of Naeba Ski Resort. See the Naeba travel page for information on location and how to get to Naeba.

Other than the massive Naeba Prince Hotel, Kinta Naeba is one of the closest Naeba lodging options to the slopes. It is a 5 minute walk down to the car park of the south gate and then another 5 minute walk to cross the bridge and get to the slopes (so driving a car to the car park doesn’t get you that much closer to the slopes).

It’s a 10 minute walk to get to the main street of town where there are various restaurants, whilst some restaurants are a 15 minute walk away.

Arrival and departure shuttles can be provided from/to the Naeba bus stop at the Prince Hotel.

Refreshing Alternative to the Prince

21/08/2025
Staying at the Kinta Naeba was such a refreshing change to a former stay at the Prince Hotel, which was a little crazy and soulless. Conversely, Kinta Naeba was quite charming, and it had an excellent host, and stylish interiors. Overall, it was great and a lovely place to stay, although there were a few minor limitations that I’d have greater expectations for considering the cost.

ROOM
I stayed in a Japanese tatami room with private bathroom in the Tower building. It was rather small but more than adequate and quite stylish. The tower building was separate to the main building where reception, the dining area and bar were, so it felt rather repetitive to go up and down stairs, put shoes and slippers on and off, and don and doff the jacket because it was dumping with snow during most of my stay, which is always a good problem to have! One upside of staying in the Tower building was that my room offered a lovely view of the slopes (if you ignore those ugly power lines) and it was quiet.

It was required to make your own bed, which is obviously not a great deal and allowed me to easily double up the futon, except that it’s more what I’d expect from a pension, not a hotel charging hotel rates. A yukata wasn’t provided to go to the onsen, which once again was an expectation not in keeping with the cost of the hotel.

ONSEN
The onsen baths in the Tower building were nice but very small for a hotel. Unfortunately it didn’t open until 4pm, and each day lots of people would turn up at the same time to use the small baths. It was a shame it didn’t have longer opening hours to spread the load a bit and allow bathing at the desired time. The views from the indoor and outdoor bath up to the ski resort were quite pleasant, although I didn’t stay in the outdoor bath for too long as it was too cool.

DINING
The food was pretty good. On my first morning I could only have breakfast at 8am, which was too late considering the lifts open at 8:30am, but on subsequent days I could have breakfast at 7:30am. Breakfast was a set meal, so there was no choice, although what was provided was quite enjoyable.

I had dinner at the restaurant one night. It was also a set meal and consisted of 4 courses. The 2 entrees were exquisite fare that were beautifully presented, and then the main course was a hamburger with gravy, akin to cafeteria fare, which wasn’t quite in keeping with the delicate nature of the appetizers. Dessert was divine, and the service and beverages were also top notch.

On other evenings I strolled into the main part of town to restaurants for dinner.

LOCATION
The location of the hotel with respect to proximity to the slopes is very good compared to most hotels at Naeba. I didn’t mind the walk down and up in ski boots. I also enjoyed the walk in and out of the main part of town to go to dinner, although I noticed that some families just ate at the hotel each evening to avoid the walk.

FACILITIES
It was absolutely dumping with snow during my stay, so it was well appreciated that one of the car parks had some onsen heating.

The small lounge/bar area in the main building was a lovely spot to sit in front of the fire. I didn’t use the lounge in the Tower building as it had a smoking room leading off it, and the stench of the smoke permeated throughout the whole lounge. I guess at least this is better than the olden days when people would have just smoked in the lounge.

Overall, I’d happily stay again at the Kinta Naeba.
