Akakura Kanko Hotel

Akakura Kanko Hotel

Established in 1937, the Akakura Kanko Hotel with red roof and white exterior is the symbol of Myoko Plateau. The hotel was fully refurbished in recent years and is the crown of Myoko Kogen when it comes to accommodation.

This hotel has very few westerners staying at it so be prepared for a very Japanese experience.

Where is the Akakura Kanko Resort and Spa?The hotel is located right in the middle of the slopes of Akakura Onsen Ski area and is absolute ski-in/ski-out.

Accommodation OptionsThere are numerous options both full Japanese style with Tatami mat floors and futons and western style with twin and double western beds.

In addition there are a variety of standards available. The main building is the older annexe and the rooms tend to be smaller than and not as glitzy as those in the new wing which has deluxe rooms, some with a fireplace and some with private open air bath on the balcony.

There are rooms to suit singles, couples, twins, triples and quads.

Hotel FacilitiesThe hotel has some great hot spring bathing facilities on site both public and private.

There is a full-service day spa with massage services plus and a fitness centre.

Free wifi is available throughout the hotel as well as in the rooms. There is also a laundry and dry cleaning service available for an additional fee.

There is also conference facilities and wedding facilities if you are looking for a place to do business or get hitched!

Restaurants and BarsThere are two restaurants to choose from one with Japanese cuisine and the other French. There is also a very nice café facing the slopes serving reasonably good coffee and a variety of treats and pastries.

Other than that there is a good selection of restaurants and Izakaya in downtown Akakura or a larger selection in down town Myoko Kogen

A shuttle bus runs to/from the hotel and downtown Myoko Kogen however it only operates until 6pm so if you are heading into town for dinner you will need a return taxi.

Excellent

Our stay at the Akakura Kanko Hotel was very memorable and a truly special experience. This excellent hotel had plenty of historic charm, and whilst it was a little outdated in a couple of places, it was largely very elegant and modernized. The staff were incredibly friendly and it was the many small touches that made the difference to our stay.

Apparently some rooms in the main part of the hotel haven’t been renovated, but ours was lovely and spacious and had modern trendy Japanese décor. It’s a shame we didn’t have the budget to stay in one of the rooms with a private onsen on the balcony – they sounded magnificent!

The meals at the hotel were exceptional (especially the kaiseki Japanese meals) but we were glad that we mixed things up by also heading into town. There were only set menus on offer and the food was very pricey. Even the informal café charged high prices.

The location had some advantages and disadvantages. It was so convenient to rent our gear, walk out the door of the locker room and be on the slopes in an instant. Being perched up on the mountain, the hotel also offered fantastic views. However the hotel is a little isolated from the town and it was a little inconvenient when we wanted to head down there for dinner. We used the on-demand hotel shuttle bus a few times but it didn’t appear to run in the evenings so we had to catch a taxi. It was also a little inconvenient to get to the nearby ski areas.

Both the indoor and outdoor onsens were a highlight, as were the views. We found some staff that spoke English, whilst there were many that didn’t but this is Japan after all!
