A.I.R. Myoko

A.I.R. Myoko

A.I.R. Myoko is a boutique hotel that has been lovingly restored. AIR Myoko combines some the aesthetics of a traditional Japanese ryokan and private onsen baths, along with western conveniences and comforts such as western beds (that are a little off the floor), western style dining room, communal lounge, and English speaking staff.

A.I.R. has a strong emphasis on cuisine which is fully vegan, with plant-based breakfasts and the option of a magnificent degustation dinner with wine pairing.

A.I.R (Artist in Residence) features lots of beautiful hand crafted Japanese cedar furniture, art works and pottery.

Where is A.I.R. Myoko?

The bus stop to other Myoko ski resorts is 300m walk from the lodge.

An arrival/departure transfer is provided to/from the Myoko Kogen train station if pre-arranged.

Charming Boutique Inn

Ideal slope side location
Course 1/snacks of degustation dinner
Beautifully presented creations with wine pairing
Quite a spacious room
Lovely private onsen bath
Liam and Nana have done a marvellous job in renovating the former Akutsu Pension in Myoko by retaining the lovely Japanese décor of the guest rooms, installing modern ensuite bathrooms, and outfitting the onsen bath houses with lovely hinoki to add a lot of charm.

Liam is a furniture maker by background which was evident in the beautiful timber pieces in the ensuite bathrooms, the dining table and lounge furniture.

The food was awesome and you’d appreciate it even if you’re not a vegan, especially if you’d had one too many kebabs from the food truck down on the main street. Breakfast consisted of a choice of 4 items which included sour dough toast with spreads, a Japanese style breakfast with tofu and pickles, gourmet oats, or delicious roasted eggplant on toast. Plus there was great coffee and freshly squeezed juice. We only stayed a couple of nights (sadly!) and breakfast was amazing, but if you stayed for a week, a choice of only 4 breakfast items might get a little repetitive. The set up of the dining table made for a sociable gathering spot.

Then there was the phenomenal dinner one night!! The degustation meal was so lovingly and creatively prepared and described, as was the pairing of wines. It was an absolute highlight!

Our room was rather spacious, and the tatami flooring, Japanese wallpaper and shoji screens made it very attractive. The western style mattress and pillows were really comfortable and it was lovely to have big fluffy towels (not something you take for granted in Japan). As is very customary with a tatami room, there were only a handful of coat hangers in the wardrobe (and no shelves) and not one hook so there was nowhere to hang towels or dry or air clothing. And whilst the shoji screens were very aesthetically pleasant, they didn’t block out light so sleeping past dawn was not on the cards without an eye mask.

We were initially worried that having to book a half hour time slot for the onsen would be a bit restrictive, but considering it’s a boutique inn with a limited number of rooms, there was never an issue in getting access to one of the two bath houses. The onsen was very lovely, and it was nice to open the window and look out onto the ski slope.

The hosts and staff were very friendly and welcoming and we would highly recommend a stay at A.I.R. Myoko. The lodge has retained its essence of Japan whilst being modern, clean and very comfortable.
