Iceland Ski Touring

A week of Guided Skiing on the Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi)

The island of ice and fire provides plenty of possibilities to enjoy a ski-touring trip. The mighty island of volcanoes, glaciers, Vikings, cod, northern lights and hot springs awaits you to discover their full potential. On the Iceland Ski Touring trip, you will be based in a nice house at the Troll Peninsula, where the highest peaks reach 1500m asl. A large variety of terrain, from gentle slopes to couloirs, sharp ridges and wide open bowls, skiing down to the ocean, close to the towns or on remote areas. Long hours of daylight to ski with no rush, choose the right time to enjoy the best light, bath on hot springs on the evening and look for northern lights at night. Sounds like a plan .....

Although tourism is a reality that can be overwhelming during the summer months, in winter you can experience Iceland's raw rural landscapes where sheep farms and fishing villages are the protagonists of daily life, and the wind and snow dictate the day's rhythm.

• Perfect ski-touring terrain for all expertise levels
• Expert knowledge of the terrain by your guides will ensure the very best ski experience
• Ski from summit to the sea
• Relaxing afternoons in the thermal pools
• Best time of the year for viewing the Northern Lights
• Golden Circle sightseeing day
• Excellent cuisine based on salmon, cod and lamb.

Snow, Terrain & Climate

Iceland is located in the middle of the North Atlantic, just below the Arctic Circle. Its south coast is affected by the Gulf current, and the annual temperatures and climate are moderate and with abundant precipitation. This special weather shapes the landscape with the presence of large glaciers and ubiquitous greenery. On the other hand, its northern coast is strongly influenced by the Arctic, with warm temperatures in summer and cold in winter, and abundant rainfall in the form of snow. The landscape has been shaped by the presence of large glaciers, which have left wide valleys and slopes of all inclinations, perfect for skiing.

On this tour you will be skiing Tröllaskagi, a peninsula on the central northern cost of Iceland with more than 100 skiable peaks with altitudes between 1,000 and 1,500m above sea level. One of the features of the area is that you can ski all the way to the ocean & on open terrain. Depending on the weather and the conditions, daily ski locations will be chosen within a radius close to the accommodation and with the possibility of connecting different valleys. Daily elevation gain can vary between 900 and 1,200m, always depending on meteorological and snow conditions and the fitness/ability of the group.

Iceland is located just below the Arctic Circle. At this time of year the temperatures are no longer extreme, the days are getting too long and the winter is over. Temperatures can go from -10 to +10ºC. The main characteristic of the climate in Iceland is the variability, although generally in this time and in this part of the island the weather is quite stable.

The fixed date tour in March runs from a Saturday to Saturday, starting and finishing at the international airport of Keflavik (or other pre-arranged location). The first day will be a travel day to the Troll Peninsula, then the following six days will be for skiing, bathing in thermal pools & northern lights gazing. After skiing on Day 7, the group will be driven back for a night in Reykjavik, with the tour finishing the next day after a sightseeing trip in the local region.
