St Moritz sounds posh and it can be, if that is what you are after. It is really three mountains and each has something different to offer from the posh to simple, with the option to eat a doner kebap or five star dining.

The skiing is diverse with some big resort style (Corviglia/Corvatsch) and all that entails to the huge mountain feel with limited/specialist accomodation (Diavolezza) or the hill across the road type resort with it's simplicity (Lagalb).

There are trains,trails and automobile travel options.

I really liked St Moritz and would like to spend more time there, however it is Switzerland and can be expensive in comparison with other locations.

Worth the hype? In a word, Yes.

It was with some trepidation that we traveled to and skied St Moritz in early February this year. Think of all the movie references that are out there for St Moritz. It very much lives up to the hype.

It's big, sparkly and doesn't have much of a soul. I know that sound like a negative but I in all honesty I really enjoyed a big day skiing here. We skied almost exclusively on piste as off had a bit of a crust. What we discovered is a wonderland of high alpine pistes groomed to perfection.

For the intermediate skier/boarder this is nirvana where you could easily spend a week.

St Moritz is everything you expect it to be and more. What a sensational ski area and winter holiday destination. 

For years St Moritz has probably been trading on its name and the real reasons (plus the odd lean snow season) for it having a reputation in the first place have possibly been forgotten. Feted as a playground for the wealthy, the St Moritz ski areas of Corviglia, Corvatsch & Diavolezza -Lagalb should instead be feted for the excellence of the their lifts, pistes and freeride adventure possibilities. St Moritz might be a little more expensive than some ski destinations in Switzerland and Europe, but it provides a superb ski experience for those with an open mind and a sense of adventure. The Powderhounds loved it.

The combination of wonderful railway transport links to the outside world, a diversity of ski terrain, world class piste trails and lifts, plus more non-ski activities than any ski resort has a right too, makes St Moritz ski holiday central.

The three separate ski areas of Corviglia (above St Moritz), Corvatsch and Diavolezza/Lagalb offer completely different skiing experiences. All three are connected by bus or train and it is possible to ski back to St Moritz Bad from Corvatsch, but other wise there are no lift or piste trail links.

Corviglia is a piste skiers paradise. Accessed by 4 different points in the valley, its sunny south facing slopes are wonderful for fast turns and long lunches. The off piste is vast as well and includes some expert only chutes and wide open alpine bowls. Strangely, the worst place to access the ski area is from the centre of St Moritz via a 2 stage funicular. Celerina and St Moritz Bad (as in ‘spa’) on the fringes are better. We started skiing early and the slopes were deliciously perfect and deserted until after 1030ish.

Corvatsch is a north facing behemoth up to 3303m and includes a glacier in its terrain. The polar opposite (literally – it is a lot colder!) of Corviglia, it nonetheless has excellent snow quality and more terrain diversity than Corviglia.

We enjoyed the freedom on St Moritz’s third ski area, Diavolezza / Lagalb. We spent the night on top of Diavolezza which turned out to be fun. We were provided with first tracks in the morning after a beautiful sunrise over the glaciers and peaks during breakfast. Our luggage was downloaded for us and we picked it up at the base station once finished skiing. The skiing and snow quality was excellent in the off piste and we barely even scratched the surface. Diavolezza’s opposite number is Lagalb, which provides a similar ski experience to Diavolezza but with a different aspect. It is very quiet compared to other ski areas, but no where was at all busy. Both areas have their own train station and are linked by connecting trails and surface conveyors. Snowboarders will need to push a bit- that’ll teach you!

For anyone on a budget, the key to skiing St Moritz is to NOT to eat out for dinner (unless it is a kebap!) and to stay in accom out of town along the train or bus lines. For everyone else, come and experience all that St Moritz has to offer at least once in your life. If you can afford it, stay in one of the many 5-star hotels to get the full St Moritz experience.

Note that driving to St Moritz in poor weather or a blizzard can be quite the adventure. If in doubt, take the train!
