You just never know until you go.....

Never a truer word was spoken than you just never know until you go. Klewenalp is case in point. When perusing the trail map prior to visiting, what was seemingly a strange ski hill is actually proven to be true in reality. Awkward terrain equates to seemingly odd lift & trail placements that only start to make sense once a full lap of the resort is completed.

And so the old adage applies. Had we never gone, we would never have discovered that Klewenalp has some seriously fun, seriously steep, seriously pleasant piste and powder skiing in amongst some seriously gob-smacking scenery.

A great family resort, the crowd on the weekend was sizeable but restricted to the easy slopes on the piste, so not truly noticed by us. Some quick exploration had us in shin to waist deep powder (depending on the aspect). The steeps off the back of the Klewenstock were..... steep with a few trees throw in for good measure (even though relatively short).

Typically for a Swiss resort, there were more families winter walking & sledding than one could poke a stock at. Great for skiers!

We stayed down on the lakeshore in Beckenried a short walk to the cable car. Very pleasant. An interesting option would be to spend the night up on the mountain. There are several lodges up around the cable car top station.

If I am in the area again and the snow is deep enough all the way down to the base at Beckenried, a return visit is definitely on the cards.

Klewenalp proves several points:
1. Everywhere is good on its day.
2. Trail maps can be accurate but deceptive at the same time.
3. Sometimes small is best for Powderhounds.
4. You NEVER know until you go!

So if you find yourself in Beckenried on the shores of Lake Lucerne be sure to spend a day or two at Klewenalp.

Klewenalp enjoys a commanding view over Lake Lucerne and surrounds and also boasts some surprisingly challenging terrain.
Do your research and some terrific off piste can be yours. I would definitely go back.

Enjoy.

Surprise warm up at Klewenalp

30/10/2018
Spent a day at Klewenalp as a warm up before heading to Engelberg. Despite a lack of snow on the lakeshore, we found some surprisingly good light, dry powder & steep fall line terrain in amongst the otherwise confusing trails. Plenty here for beginners & intermediates too.

The views are amazing. The ski all the way down to the lake would be too if mother nature wasn't under attack!

Stayed a very nice hotel in Beckenried at the bottom of the ski hill.
