No Expense Spared at Gitschberg Jochtal.

01/02/2017
No expense has been spared linking the Gitschberg and Jochtal ski areas to form the Gitschberg Jochtal ski resort by way of an extensive gondola system. Previously known by a host of names, Gitschberg Jochtal is a smaller Dolomites ski area that has impressive lifts, piste trails & snow-making capabilities.  During Powderhounds visit in early January 2017, a lean start to the season was evident, but all lifts & the majority of piste trails were operating (including some very steep black runs off Jochtal & the valley run back to the Gitschberg base near Maranza,). Snow making quality was excellent, but perhaps given the weather, our expectations were low. Super impressed!

Two main base areas near the villages of Valles (Vals) & Maranza (Meransen) provide the mountain accommodation. Valles is in a northerly aspect valley and sees very little sun through mid winter, but has some ski in ski out hotels.  For more sun the Maranza area is better, but most accommodation is a walk/bus ride to the lifts. A great learning area is in Valles. Off piste terrain is limited compared to other resorts and there isn't much to keep expert snow riders interested.

The ski resort is close to wonderful Bressanone. One of our favourite small cities of the world, it is beautiful & steeped in history, plus has bus & train links to several nearby ski resorts. Walking to the bus stop at Bressanone, we went through via a 15th century walled 'Bishop's Garden" though ancient doorways & lanes, passing under gorgeous frescoes along the way. Markets & a lively after dark scene tick the final boxes!

We would however love to see & ski Gitschberg Jochtal in deep natural snow - perhaps one day we will.

Note that this is a German speaking part of Italy - auf wiedersehen!
