Cortina - not just skiing, it is an adventure!

04/04/2018
WOW, starting at Col Gallina skied the Armentarola and other runs in the Cinque Torri area, in between and past the most beautiful mountains (and only occasionally saw other people). There aren't really words to describe the beauty, you have to see it for yourself - the massive sheets of ice on sides of cliffs, great groomed runs with fun off piste. Then a flat section where for 2 euro you can get a ride on a horse drawn rope tow (for real) and if your lucky you get the team that has the gorgeous and mischievous 3 legged border collie type dog.

I'm going back.

The pleasure that is Cortina.

After skiing Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2017 when the area had very little natural snow, it was such a pleasure to return and ski it with a full winter mantle. The scenery spins the head. It was joyous to see my ski partners, none of whom had been to Cortina in winter before, continually stop skiing and just take in the scenery.

Cortina opened a new advanced trail on Faloria this year making it without doubt the best Italian ski resort for advanced snowriders (and maybe even the best in Europe for advanced on piste trails in a comparatively sized resort). That said Cortina's skiing has still has some issues - the old lifts being a major one - but the scenery, quality of the piste trails, food, drink and style more than make up for it.

A huge strength of Cortina are the uncrowded slopes on any given day when compared to the other major Dolomites ski resorts of Alta Badia and Val Gardena. Start the day for first lifts at Col Gallina and you will have blissful solitude in wonderful surrounds. The Lagazuoi gets loads of people doing the Armentarola run and why wouldn't they. The combination of scenery, rifugios, piste, snow quality, history and horses makes it one of the best interediate runs in the world.

Cortina d'Ampezzo town is still full of fur coat wearing Italian gentry plus has the shops, wine bars and restaurants to go with it. Prices are competitive though, this is Italy after all.

We watch Cortina's future with interest as a number of lift improvements are in planning, including one on spectacular Cristallo.

I love Cortina, I have been skiing in Italy 6 times in the past 18 years and will still go back.
Cortina is a bustling town, skiing is great, I have been there in bad snow years and they always have good coverage, it isn't powder days, but if you like skiing on fast groomed empty runs it is for you.
After skiing Faloria/Cristallo, Tofana/Socrepes, Areas on the Falzerego pass, get over to Alta Badia and the Sella Ronda which opens up a vast amount of skiing. Also Kronplatz is nearby.

Ahh the dolomites. Great food, aperol spritz and spectacular scenery.

We skied the Giro sciistico della Grande Guerra or First World War ski circuit -

https://www.suedtirol.info/en/experience/first-world-war-ski-circuit_activity_66657#.WrCetsG8w2M.email

One of the top 10 things to do on skis. It employs all modes of ski transportation including cable cars, gondolas, chair lifts, surface lifts, horses and busses. All through some of the finest mountains in the world.

Be warned though.
We stopped only once during the day for coffee and cake and still only made the final chairlift back to the starting point by 8 minutes. It's a big day.

That said a terrific experience

Cortina - still got it.

It could be seen as a negative, but the 'disjointed' nature of the Cortina ski areas means that every day is like an adventure into another world. Skiing down Tofana with the dawn, the ski tour from Lagazuoi to Armentarola, the views and crisp snow on Faloria.  Cortina has still got it.

A must visit Italian area.
Whether the snow is face deep or sheet ice, you can always cheer yourself up by looking up at the magnificent surrounds.
Definitely somewhere to visit more than once.

The lifts may be old but what a great spot Cortina is. The scenery, the rifugios, and the town are fantastic. Gotta love the Dolomites.
