Great village but .....

07/11/2024
Stayed in this cute little French village in January 2023, its a great village with lots of little cheese stores to load up at after skiing. I chose this mountain because we were meeting some English friends that were beginner/intermediates so I figured we could get them going then we could ski over the top of the hill into Morzine and beyond. BUT 2023 was a terrible season and the 2nd week of January Les Gets had not yet opened for the season.
The good news was I hired a car and we drive 20 minutes to Avoriaz (in the broader Portes du Soleil). Thats a great mountain. Park at the base and get the gondola up the steep cliff and suddenly the terrain opens up, you can ski into Switzerland for lunch at Chatel. Lots of varied terrain, maybe not much expert but good intermediate to advanced. For apres has a very lively Le Folie Douce from about 4-6pm then everyone gets off the hill.
So my recommendation would be to stay in Les Gets if you have some intermediate skiers with you but definitely hire a car and do some skiing at Avoriaz.
We stayed at Alpine Residences in a 3 bedroom apartment - can highly recommend, price was ok could be a lot worse. Note: the snow ratings I am giving are more for the region not just Les Gets as obvioulsy I didn't actually ski that hill!
