Where to Stay at Kaprun - Kitzsteinhorn

Located at the start of a deep valley at a relatively low elevation of only 786m, the close proximity of Kaprun to the adjacent high mountains place it in shadow for much of winter. Regardless, the village is still a great place to stay if spreading your time between Kitzsteinhorn and Zell am See, and the shade contributes to colder temperatures and greater snow retention - you are here on a winter’s holiday after all! A limited number of ski-in ski-out lodgings exist in the sunlight on Maiskogel above town, plus one atmospheric mountain hut on Kitzsteinhorn, but otherwise most accommodation is and around the centre of Kaprun, or either side of the main road through town.

Kaprun Village Map & Environs

The village of Kaprun has undergone something of a revitalisation in the last few years. Whilst there were always a host of hotels and apartments clustered near the town centre, plus resort hotels and guesthouses on the town's outskirts, since the construction of the Maiskogel gondola & 3K K-onnection gondola link to Kitzsteinhorn, more high-quality accommodation has sprung up around the Maiskogel base ('Kaprun Center'). Additionally, loads more options have also been built on the road leading out of town up to the Gletscherjet 1 valley station, plus several older hotels & guesthouses have undergone complete overhauls so as to be unrecognisable from they were just a few seasons ago.

An interesting way to stay in the area is to spend a few nights in the town centre of Kaprun and then move to a traditional 'Berghotel' high on the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See.

Kaprun Ski-in Ski-out Accommodation

A few of ski-in ski-out lodgings exist at Kaprun, the best of which are on the flanks of Maiskogel above the town like the outstanding Zaglgut Hotel & Chalets. Several holiday rental apartments are also dotted on the hillside down toward town. Other ski-in ski-out lodgings are more readily available in nearby Zell am See, set high on the mountain, accessed by cable car. On Kitzsteinhorn at 2,300m altitude, the ski-in, ski-out Krefelder Hütte will provide the region's most authentic alpine lodging experience.

Best Hotels, Apartments & Chalets in Kaprun

The town of Kaprun is quieter and smaller than Zell am See but still provides a lively vibrance that one hopes for when staying in Austria in winter. Bars, restaurants and shops are clustered in the centre of town and around the base of Maiskogel. Access to the ski lifts is easy by foot or free local ski bus to Maiskogel or free ski bus to Kitzsteinhorn (or Zell am See).

Near Maiskogel Valley Station

Several fabulous hotels are now next to the gondola valley station (the 'Kaprun Center') at the base of Maiskogel on the Zell am See side of town. People's Hotel, Das Schneiderei, and the Auhof are all within a few hundred metres of the lift and within easy strolling distance of all the other shops bars & restaurants in town, making them a preferred place to stay. Multiple bus stops are also available nearby for easy travel to Zell am See, or up valley to the base of Kitzsteinhorn for first tracks.

Central Kaprun

The centre of Kaprun can be pleasantly bustling during peak season and is quite pretty under a mantle of snow with the river running through the heart of the village. Salzburger Platz is the original town square and is surrounded by great hotels & restaurants, and still only 2-300m walk from both the Maiskogel & Lechnerberg ski lifts.

Eastern Side of Kaprun

Away from the rumble of the main road through town and the hum of the river, the eastern side of Kaprun stretches away toward the castle & forested foothills. Along Schlossstraße there are a procession of fantastic places to rest one’s head, and they steadily get quieter as one heads along the road, ending just past the stylish SOULSISTERS’ Hotel.

A little further south, in amongst a nest of accommodations within walking distance of Salzburger Platz, holiday apartments & chalet like Dorf Chalets are common, and then out on the edge overlooking the town is the exceptional (& still affordable), Panorama Hotel Guggenbichl.

In sunnier locations between Zell am See & Kaprun are several excellent lodging selections. The best is the sensational Tauern Spa Hotel, halfway between the two towns. Some fantastic traditional guesthouses are just up the valley.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, deep in the valley toward the base of Kitzsteinhorn is the quiet Hotel Künstleralm where we recommend staying with the half-board option that includes breakfast & a five-course dinner.
