Sun Crystals

29/05/2020
We went to Sun Peaks late Jan and had an awesome time with the powder and snow, especially at the top once the clouds rolled back. A great range of terrain, though not as much expert stuff as I would've liked, and something for everyone everywhere.
Morrisey was gret because there were many snowboarders because of the flat section in the middle. and had some great areas to just cruise through at whatever pace you wanted. Had so much at the top of Burfeild but I will never go down below the halfway pick up/drop off, it was horrible crud, and such a long time to get back up. Those faces were amazing though and the panorama view as well. The entire crystal and top half of the burfield chairs have amazing runs with powder and all sides and nice steep runs to challenge those advanced skiers as well as some cruisers to get back to where you want.
All in all that week was amazing and staying in the Crystal Forest was great; person spa and close to the morrisey and orient lifts, can be ski in ski out, but only really a short walk.

We skied Sun Peaks over Christmas for 10 days. Loved everything about it. Perfect for families (kids under age 12 were free), lots of intermediate groomed runs, lines weren’t long & ski in ski out& no wind! We’ll be back!

Quiet - Even during Holidays

We visited during the Christmas holiday 2017 (start of the 2017-18 season). It was absolutely empty for the majority of the week we visited, the only lines I encountered was a 2 or 3 minute line on Sundance Express two of the days. A short guide to the mountain is this:
Morissey - ridiculously uncrowded, retains powder the longest with some tree runs and north facing slopes, some nice steeps that can be great with powder staying untouched
Sundance (and Elevation) - mostly for intermediates/beginners and terrain park skiers. a few tree runs in the lone fir area, good for intermediates who want to try powder and tree runs.
Sunburst - good pistes, if the blues and blacks down are groomed they can be nice, Bluff and the surrounding blacks can be nice as well.
Crystal and Upper Burfield - Crystal offers a few nice groomed blues and blacks, Burfield (above the mid station) offers nice powder runs in the trees (the whole Juniper Ridge area) and the only high alpine terrain
West Bowl - T-bar offering some of the best powder
Lower Burfield - steepest area, nice tree runs (Freddy's, Challenger), but for experts only
Gil's - nice hiking area, not steep, mostly in the trees, you should try it at least once

I gave the snow a 4 since when we were there there was limited quantity, but the quality is easily the best in Interior and coastal BC.
5 star uncrowded, outside of main base you'll never encounter lines, main base might be a couple minutes at the worst times
3 star lifts, outside of the base (Sundance, Sunburst, Morissey) no high speed chairlifts, though next season they may change that.
4 star piste, great for confident intermediates
4 star off-piste, good tree-runs and alpine skiing near Burfield, west bowl can be exceptional, Gil's can also be nice,
5 star child friendly, all sorts of family friendly activities
4 star value - the nice ski in/out outside of the village can be expensive, limited options
3 star nightlife - best for people who enjoy a quiet village

Sun Peaks is a hidden gem. It’s quiet, consistently had great conditions and has a wide variety of terrain. Groomers last through the afternoon and powder for days. I love the in bounds area at Gils when you have powder stashed away and challenging trees. I have been to Sun Peaks multiple times per year since 2014 and have never been disappointed by the conditions. It doesn’t matter which month you go, it’s always great.

There is lots to do besides skiing and the village has okay night life. My fav part of the village to stay in is Snow Creek. I love the ski in/out from the main lift and village plus it’s vibe makes me feel like I have really gotten away.

I love sun peaks!!!

The skiing/snowboarding/cross country

Sun peaks is a great resort for all. Sun peaks has great beginner to intermediate trails, as well as many amazing expert trails. For beginners and park riders the Sundance express lfit is perfect for you because it has many calm cruiser trails for beginner and intermediates. Not only does the sundance lift have beginner terrain it also has a very well put together and maintained park with many features that are changed or moved around each day. The terrain park has beginner to expert features. Another great lift for beginner to expert riders is the Sunburst express lift as well as the crystal lift. These lifts provide access to green and blue cruisers to some of the best terrain at the resort. For the experts looking for something more challenging there is always gils zone. (The hike into gils varys from 5-30 mins depending on how far you travel into the zone) Gils zone is a sidecountry hike that is still within the avalanche control area however you do have to hike to get to it and is not groomed(Except for the cats tracks to get back). Depending on how far into the gils zone you hike you can encounter some very steep terrain and treed area. Gils zone was my favorite part of gils zone because couple of days before it had snowed 25 cm and there was still and unbelieabe amount of fresh deep powder. I had some of the best tree runs of my life riding in gils zone. (I would strongly recomend only going into gils zone if you are comfortable riding in powder and trees as well you should alsways ski with someone in this type of terrain)Apart from gils on mount tod there are many gladed steep runs as well as some amazing runs on the burfield lift(its really slow and the snow is usually not good later in the season in this area). I would recommend skiing the burfield lift on colder days where it remains below zero lower down on the mountain or on days where there is a lot of snow. Lastly there is mount morriesry, this is a great place for beginners - experts riders with there being easy blue and green runs as well as black and double black diamond runs. The double blck diamond runs on mount morriesy is a great place to find lots of snow even weeks after a big snowfall. The double black diamond runs offer amazing snow, great steeps and great tree riding as well as a fair amount of cliffs to drop off to the sides of the trails. This side of the mountain is often overlooked because it is smaller then mount Tod however I find that some of the best riding the resort offers in on that side of the mountain. I do not cross country ski however there seems to many cross country ski trails throughout sun peaks as well as many cross country skiers.

Sun peaks accomdations were great because from the place you were staying it is so easy to get to the lifts because if the ski trails that are right outside your door. Sun peaks also offers many restuarants in the village as well as and arcade for kids and ski and snowboard tune ups. If you need to rent your equipment you just have to walk into any of the ski/board shops there and they will set you up.

Sun Peaks is the best resort in north america with all of these 5 criteria: 1) huge mountain, 2) tons of lodging within a 5 minute walk to slopes, 3) a nice village, 4) within an hour of an airport, and 5) very very affordable. There are almost no other resorts with all of those things together. It's a unicorn and it's beautiful.
