Hokkaido Northside Kurodake - New for 2023

Hokkaido North Side is a multi-day tour where you can explore beyond the high-profile ski areas of Hokkaido, in the zones on the northern side of the Daisetsuzan National Park. The tour is based in Kamikawa near Kurodake (Black Mountain). The Powderhounds rate Kurodake as one of the best ski areas in Japan for powder hunters, due to its steep and varied terrain and the abundance of snow it scores. In winter, Kurodake should be called "white mountain" instead of "black mountain"!

The main objective will be to use the Kurodake Ropeway to provide initial access to the mountain, which is a huge backcountry paradise. The itinerary will be kept a little flexible depending on weather and snow conditions, although March is a great time to visit Kurodake when the weather is a little more settled than in the peak of winter when it just snows and blows, and the cable car is often closed. As required, other backcountry zones will be explored and the last day of the tour can include some resort skiing/riding if guests have the day available (e.g. a late flight out or no other plans).

The Hokkaido Northside Tour is offered as a group tour where solos or small groups can join one of the fixed date tours, or if you have your own group you can have a private tour, pending availability. This tour requires a minimum of 2 people to go ahead and a maximum of 6. If you have any questions or want to double check about availability, please make a booking request.

Ability

This tour requires advanced riding skills with at least entry level backcountry knowledge. Riders should be fit and very comfortable skiing/riding powder and have some experience with backcountry touring and safety aspects.

Equipment

Backcountry ski and snowboard equipment will be required for this tour as there will be a mixture of lift accessed sidecountry as well as backcountry tours. For touring skis we recommend a minimum of 100+ underfoot. Avalanche safety equipment will be essential. For more information on equipment rental please contact us for details.

Itinerary

Day 1

Pick up from the New Chitose Airport and relax as your guide drives through the snowy mountain passes with a relaxing stop off at a Japanese hot spring (onsen) en-route to your lodging. Check in, get settled and then a 7pm briefing on the trip.

Day 2

Hit up a high powder zone with a ski tour in a prized zone not far from the lodge, depending on the forecast.

Day 3

A short drive from the lodge is the iconic Kurodake Ropeway (cable car), providing access to one of the best backcountry areas in Hokkaido. Your guide will choose the best runs depending on the conditions and the time of the season.

Day 4

Today you will use the Kurodake Ropeway again to access some of the runs off the backside, which are amongst the best lines in Hokkaido! Later on in the day you'll be driven to the city of Asahikawa for a great Japanese dinner and some drinks in some popular bars of the city.

Day 5

On the last day, if you have a late flight out you can do an easy day of resort skiing to just have fun and decompress those tired legs. The resort will be chosen according to where the drop off point is.

At the end of the day you will be dropped off for your return journey home or onwards adventure.

Accommodation

You will be staying at Yukiumi House, based in Kamikawa in Central Hokkaido. Yukiumi House is a simple yet cozy Japanese style lodge operated by the Summit Ski staff.

Rooms are twin share, and all utilise shared bathrooms.

Please make a booking request for more details on lodging.
