Svaneti Georgia Ski Touring

The Svaneti region of Georgia is a remote & beautiful area of historic fortified villages, high mountains, breathtaking views, deep snow, superb skiing & very few people. The area around Mestia has recently seen an improvement & creation of local ski resorts (forested Hatsvali & alpine Tetnuldi) providing modern ski lifts in an ancient land. Svaneti is also home to several of the highest peaks in the Caucasus. This tour combines the best of the region's resort skiing, backcountry ski-touring, medieval villages, hospitality & culture in an all inclusive package. See the full tour itinerary here >

Snow & Ski Terrain

The mountains of the Svaneti reached as high as 5200m & are covered in a deep blanket of snow from December to April. Snow depths in the high alpine can be as deep as 5m in the height of the season. The tour takes advantage of the Tetnuldi ski lifts to assist in ascending to over 3500m elevation & also undertakes ski touring using skins with daily vertical ascents of between 1000 to 1400m - depending on snow conditions & the group's ability. Long ski descents of over 1400m vertical are anticipated during the tour.

The town of Mestia is your base for the Georgian ski touring adventure. The guest house which is your home for 6 nights is amazing whether you are ski touring or just enjoying the winter days in the mountains. Walks around Mestia are a wonderful way to experience the real Svaneti. The Hatsvali ski area is just a 10 minute walk from the accommodation.

Your guest house has a range of single, double, twin & triple rooms plus rooms suitable for bigger groups. Every room is equipped with its own bathroom & are provided with linen and towels. There is a common room when the group can gather in the evening or during the day & also a terrace for relaxing & taking in the view. Although it might be cold ,it is always nice to seat in the crisp admiring the nearby mountain peaks.

To ensure everyone arrives in time for departure flights, the last night of the tour will be in a hotel in Kutaisi. Those departing later in the day can take some time to explore the fascinating city & not to be missed market.

All meals are included on the tour – from the first dinner upon arrival in Mestia to the last breakfast in Kutaisi before departure. There are 3 main meals per day – breakfast, lunch-box and dinner. In between, there are several snacks options available for you. Empower your ski touring day in the morning by having a wide array of fresh fruits, muesli, freshly baked bread, yogurts, etc. served for breakfast. Dinner are a wholesome meal – containing lots of veggies and other various healthy and local food ingredients. Vegetarian and vegan options are provided for all meals too. During the day we provide a lunch-box with fruits, eggs, cheese and bread.

Location & Transport

The tour begins & ends on a Saturday at Kutaisi (KUT) airport, Georgia. You will be greeted upon arrival , then a week later dropped off in time for your flight departure the following Saturday after a comfortable night in Kutaisi. Ground transfers in a private van will transport you to your base for the week in the town of Mestia. All local transport is covered in the tour. Refer to map below for locations & points of interest.

There are options to fly to Mestia from Kutaisi (instead of the ground transfer) or be picked up in Tbilisi (at the airport or other location) for transport to the Svaneti. Both options are at an additional cost.

Safety is a paramount concern when ski-touring in the Svaneti. All ski guides have a valid guiding license and currency in mountain rescue. If required, the guides can instruct group members on ski-touring theory and practice to improve their experience on the tour.

Pick*up at Kutaisi airport. Upon arrival the group will wait for other participants and then be on the way to Mestia. You will stop in the last town before the Svaneti, called Zugdidi. There you can exchange money (the exchange rate is much better than at airport or in Mestia). Afterwards we drive to Mestia with one stop, where you can have your first ‘hachapuri’ (a local traditional cheese bread) and a cup of coffee or tea. Evening arrival to Mestia, where Nino is waiting for us at the guesthouse to serves a freshly cooked dinner. Later in the evening, meet with our guides. Free time for walking in the enchanting town centre of Mestia.

Our first day on Svaneti snow is at Tetnuldi ski-resort. Chairlifts takes the group to 3160m and from there we have around 700m vertical of freeride powder skiing. The purpose of this day is, firstly that you check your equipment and get familiarized with the snow conditions and altitude. Also, your guides will monitor your fitness, skill and knowledge so we can adjust the level of difficulty for the tour accordingly .

After a few descents via the chairlifts, the afternoon will the first easy ski-tour. From the highest chairlift, you will don skins and ascend 300m vertical to a nearby saddle. The following descent has more than 1000m of enjoyable powder snow, finishing at the lowest point of the ski resort.

After breakfast the group is driven to the village of Mazeri, where we can start ski-touring for the day. With every step (slide!) you make, the scenery becomes more amazing as you get closer and closer to the magnificent Mount Ushba. Usually, between 1000 – 1400 meters of ascent is completed depending on the conditions and fitness of the group. Descent is to the same village as the starting point. At the local bar, there is time to order a well-deserved beer. Driving to & from Mazeri takes around 45 minutes each way.

After breakfast the group is driven to the nearby village of Lahili. Today you will acend the slopes of Mount Laila – a peak over 4000 meters. Our goal is not the summit but a pass which has the same name – Laila Pass. Usually, between 1000 – 1400 meters of ascent is completed depending on the conditions and fitness of the group. Descent is to the same village as the start. Enjoy a drink from another local bar before heading back to Mestia. Driving to and from Lahili takes around 30 minutes each way.

Ushguli is a true gem of the Svaneti. At over 2100m elevation, Ushguli’s many fortified tower houses are isolated in winter. The drive from Mestia to Ushguli is an experience on its own. We will need over 2 ½ hr each way – but it’s worth it. The day will start a bit earlier than previous. There are many possibilities for ski-touring and we will find the best route for your skills and snow conditions. After ski-touring the group can drive back to Mestia or stay overnight*. Evenings in Ushguli are magical. (*Note additional cost of €40/person is staying overnight in Ushguli).

If not in Ushgii, the day is free to ski on your own. Walk to Hatsvali ski area or take a ride up to Tetnuldi. Hatsvali is 10 minute walk from your guesthouse and has some nice tree-lined slopes & off-piste tree skiing.

If the group decided to stay in Ushguli, you will do ski-touring there – a whole day program before driving back in the afternoon. Ushguli’s advantage is that it is the only time you can simply put on your gear and start skiing from the accommodation – no driving needed in the morning.

The last day of ski-touring, but it finishes with a superb ski descent. After the 45min drive up to Tetnuldi you will ride the chairlifts and then tour & ski a perfect line to the village of Adishi. You can expect more than 1400 m of descent. Adishi is an authentic Svan village popular with hikers in summer, but very quiet in winter.

Driving to Tetnuldi takes some 45 minutes and returning from Adishi takes more than 1 ½hr. Later that evening you leave the Svaneti behind & return to Kutaisi for a night in a hotel.

After a sleep in Kutaisi it is time to head to the airport. Transfers will be organized ensuring you will be on time. If you have departures in the afternoon, you can explore the ex-capital of Georgia. The market is a ‘must-do’ while you are there.

Note- Whilst this is a standard itinerary, due to weather & snow conditions the plan can change. Some days may be modified including a change of location for a specified day's ski program.
